AKG K812 Pro

That's exactly the way I feel about the vastly underrated Martin Logan Mikros 90 and the vastly overrated KEF M500 portables.  To my ears the MLs easily outperform the KEFs on practically every front, yet the KEFs remain the more popular and the more expensive.
Sounds like a sweet deal for the K812s right now!  They are still retailing for about &1400-$1500 in most places in the US, although they are only $1200 through Massdrop.

Sort of like T1 and HD800, or even HD650/DT880/K701 etc.  The Senns usually comes out as the favourite (and objectively, they do usually measure better), but subjectively I just never liked the Senns.  That's why I had K701 and currently the T1 and K812.

Either way, I scored my pair of K812 for 1000 bucks brand new (I knocked off another 100 when I told the shop I don't want the aftermarket cable in the package).  I think I got a great deal.

Just in case anyone is interested - I just finished a comparison between the T1 and AKG K812
http://www.head-fi.org/t/745213/comparison-review-a-tale-of-two-flagships-part-deux-beyerdynamic-t1-vs-akg-k812

The T1 were selling for as little as $499 on Amazon at one point.
For me--and as much as I really wanted to like them, the T1 were a huge disappointment.  There was something about the treble that irritated me.
In fact, everything Beyerdynamic marketed after their 2003 version of the DT880 fell short of their namesake IMHO.

Nice deal!
Congratulations, and keep us posted!

I find the new Beyers a bit too zingy and bright in their treble, they don't fatigue me, but their is definitely a sharpness going on in the treble. I liked the T1 personally despite it's treble, but the K812 is my favorite of the uber dynamic trio. There are some old style Beyers still sold, the DT 150 is one, which is one of my favorite Beyers in production. How is the DT 880 2003 version compared to the DT 880 2005 version?

DT880/2003, although a bit leaner/dryer in the upper midrange, had WAY better HF and LF extension than the DT880/2005 IMHO.

Different people, different physical attributes, different preferences I guess.  I love the T1 - but I do enjoy any of the three big dynamics (T1, HD800, K812).

How you describe them reminds me of the K601/K612 and I think I remember reading the 2003 has less present midbass than the 2005 a while ago.

kamn,
Here is a link to a short thread I started awhile ago:

I still miss the DT880/2003!  Definitely one of my all-time favorite cans, the ones I probably most regreted selling (I was--sigh!--unemployed at the time).

Hey frank! How have you been? Good to see you on as its been a while. Glad you're liking the k812. I've been using the oppo pm-1 for the past week through the loaner program and while it has its strengths, I feel it has overly compensated some aspects of the music that I feel a dynamic headphone does naturally. It seems overly tight in timbre and not able to freely mimic the resonances that some instruments and voices so musical. Also, being that it's an open planar I've found they image differently than open dynamic. What's seemingly missing is the coherent connection in the same space and rather producing alternate localizations of instruments that I find to be distracting in a timely manner. Granted there are a lot of aspects of the phone that are pretty amazing. I LOVE instrumental bass on them

I like the PM-1 but it needs power(as most planars do) to get the most out of them been really loving them with the Moon Silver Dragon cable which lifted the veil and using the Viva and Liquid Gold  which both have large sound stages it does very well. The K812 is one of the bette dynamics to come along in a while . Enjoy both for all they do.
