The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

And, not to be obvious, make sure iBasso is turned ON before plugging in the USB cord.  If it is off, all it will do is charge.  In fact, you can test it by doing just that and see if you get the charge screen.  If so, then your USB cord is connected, at least for charging purposes.

Also, you might try doing a Factory Reset of your DX50, and then reset all prefs including USB.  I would also suggest that you reboot the DX50 and your Windows machine.

I did it finally! Problem was the usb cables i use, i changed three and the last worked, so i could install modded 1.50 sound explosion, i'm listening right now and it is very good, i think i'll try the bass version too. Thanks to everyone for the support in my darkest hour, you're great

Just one thing. Do you know the "click" Dx50 does when you start or turn it off? I noticed recently (especially after 1.50 upgrade) that it has become pretty loud. Did someone else experience the same?

Hi everybody.
smile.gif
I just got my DX50 a few days ago. Before it arrived I read quite a bit of this thread (every post starting from 1.5.0 fw release and then some). I've lurked on Head-Fi before as well, but now I finally felt like I needed to register to give some input myself and hopefully receive some feedback.
First of all, I ordered my DX50 from a seller on (European) amazon marketplace, since I didn’t want to deal with duty fees/taxes and whatnot (which I now regret a bit since I realized some people actually ended up still saving money after clearing duty fees [in other words, I paid quite a bit extra {but I did require fast-ish shipping since I'm moving between countries, so ordering from China didn't seem like a good idea}]). Sadly, I was a bit disappointed with a few things. First, the impression I got from pictures/unboxings etc. gave me the idea that the player had a really clean presentation. Sadly though, my unit's packaging was bit of a mess. First of all, although it looked impressive and clean from the outside, the foam that is glued at the top of the cover of the box, was almost ripped off and also crooked, which gave quite a nasty first impression. Also (not talking about the cover anymore), the glue that held the cardboard “front” to the “foamboard” with the cutout where the player rested/was placed had stuck partially on the sides of the player itself. I was fortunately able to rub it away without any damage, but once again, it made me that much less excited with my investment. Well, the packaging isn't that important to me either way, so moving on the player.
Now, this next finding made me feel like I might have a lemon, but do let me know if you've had the same experience yourself. Basically, the usb port inside of the player seems badly aligned with the enclosure. It is so close to the top of the usb port opening as a matter of fact, that the pins from the microusb cable included damaged the plastic enclosure, essentially making two tiny openings at the top, where the two "pins" on the cable are. And trust me on this: I baby my devices, especially when they're new, so it was not due to rough handling or anything. As a matter of fact, it was the 2nd time I inserted the cable in and I tried to take it out slowly after noting it was way too tight fit the first time. But nope, after I got the jack mostly out of the port, the pins got stuck on the top of the plastic enclosure and I tried pulling it lightly at different angles, but it was simply impossible to remove it cleanly. So I had no option, but to pull a little harder, with the plastic getting slightly damaged in the process (very small damage fortunately, only the size of the "pins" at the top of the microusb jack). Since it would be quite complicated for me to return the player, I figured I could live with it and ended up solving this problem by modifying a microusb cable, essentially removing the "pins" at the top of the jack, since after all, they're pretty much useless. After this little “mod” the jack on this particular cable slides in out & out without any hassle. But I do have to note that when inserting the jack, it still is (and always was) basically stuck to the plastic surrounding the opening in the enclosure, at the side where the pins in the jack would be. I would like to know if it's only on mine? I didn't see the cosmetic damage that happened to my unit in any of the pictures I've seen so I figured I just happen to have one with either the whole PCB or just the port placed a bit crooked. But since the 3.5 mm / 1/8 inch ports seem solid and I haven't noticed any other major issues with the unit, I feel like it's not worth the trouble of sending it back since I might not have enough time to receive another one back before my flight.
Secondly, a very minor gripe, but after removing the battery I noted fingerprints on the sheet metal behind the battery. Now, I don't actually care about such. But I would still like to know whether other people noticed this? I basically would like to know if it's normal for it to have fingerprints from the factory, or whether the reseller I ordered from played around with the device. I mean, perhaps they just tested the player to make sure it works fine before sending it out. But I'm curious.. Also the battery WAS inside the player and it was also almost fully charged (usual?). However, it doesn’t seem like a used device, seeing that the protector with the button/port labels was still on the screen and I can’t find any blemishes on it that would be caused by use. And it was sold as new definitely.
I’m a little bummed by these things since I paid extra after all, but I simply don’t feel like it’s worth sending it back. I mean, even though I felt a little remorse after being disappointed by the messy presentation, I fell in love after listening to the device. It really does sound fabulous. I was going to post some of my findings on the firmware side of things which I haven’t seen mentioned yet on the pages I read, but I realized I’ve already written a short essay, so I’ll wait for some comments on the packaging/fingerprints/usb port before I note those. Now I’m off to listen to my DX50, which I simply haven’t had enough time to listen to yet. Happy to be here folks! Hope you don’t mind my wall of text..

(also I thought my English is good, but heh, while writing this post I realized how hard it is to find words to describe some more specialized things.. I know pictures would have helped a bunch, but I don’t have my camera right now and the pics I took with my phone ended up terrible)

Pitty that You had such problems. Haven`t read about such problems with DX50 yet and my unit is very high quality with very precise jacks/sockets and cable.

Edit: Oh yes, now I remember also that someone had loose connector but other than that, no physical quality issues that I know of.

I believe one member posted that his connector was loose.  Other than that I've seen no negative postings.  My USP port is tight but not overly so.  Fingerprints?  I would have assumed that anyone assembling the device would be wearing gloves.  As for the packaging, is it possible that the issues happened during shipping?  My container was perfect.  For you to have issues with the box and the USB does not seem very "iBasso."  But you made a choice to keep it, so I hope you enjoy that which it does well, play music.

I wanted to attach/link some pics, but apparently and understandably I don't seem to have rights to do so yet.
So here's a link to a gallery of my pics: http://postimg.org/gallery/3iwm1gdfc/
I recommend viewing the full size versions for the pictures of the usb port (click the picture again, url will end /full/ when you're viewing the full res image).
So, looking similar? I also included a picture of the player as a "proof" and a picture of the packaging thing I mentioned.

Thank you all for your input. Basically yes, I also figured that all of my gripes with the packaging and prints and whatnot have to do with the reseller and/or shipping company.
The only thing that might be iBasso's fault would be this usb port thingy. Thing is, everything feels sturdy, the port definitely doesn't seem loose.
And other than this gripe with the port, the build quality feels superb and I feel bummed that I have to complain.. I think I'm simply unlucky with my unit.
I mean, faults and errors happen with the largest of the brands, so it wouldn't be completely unheard of for a smaller company to have a little slip up.
Especially when everything else with the unit is fine & I truly believe now that the packaging mess is due to the reseller/shipping comp. Actually I'm sure iBasso would replace the unit, but since I won't be settling in one country for a while, I figured I might as well live with it as long as other issues don't show up.
I want to clarify that overall I'm very happy with the player, which should say quite a bit given these "misfortunes".

Overall this is a damn good device, I do not regret this purchase (even if it was 2nd hand) at all

  Hi everybody.
smile.gif
I just got my DX50 a few days ago. >>Snip<<

My DX50 came fulfilled from Amazon despite buying it from Advanced MP3 Players - My Box too was pretty messy and noticed some glue on the DX50 when i'd removed it - no bother it was easily wiped off.  I also noticed that the USB slot was slightly out on mine as well - it's not too bad though but after close inspection it does seem that the USB cable has also chipped the opening of mine - not to worry i really had to look hard to notice.

Curiosity got the best of me too so i decided to check underneath the battery (i'd not felt the need to remove the cover upto now!) and yup noticed a fingerprint and greasy smudges  - seems like maybe a slightly low quality batch maybe...

I've had mine for 3 weeks or so now - i absolutely love it!  I'm just experimenting with the Sound Unlocked FW - i'm a little unsure at the moment - i think i prefer the stock 1.5.0 so far, i dunno - will give it another day or so!

I quite enjoyed the sound of Rockbox but found it just too fiddly to operate so unfortunately had to remove it.

While i'm here does anyone know if there's a way to search for example in the artist selection - i have like 500 or so artists listed here and it's pretty tedious scrolling through the whole list to find what i want!

Cheers
Paul

synthesis, if You like stock 1.5.0 sound, then don`t forget to try Sound Unlocked 1.3.3 FW also. You`ll probably like it

I submitted a post a couple of hours ago, but added a link to a gallery of some pics, so hmm.. Maybe it won't be approved since it hasn't shown up yet.
But let's hope it will.. I can't remember what I wrote exactly. But I did clarify there that I am really enjoying the device regardless of the slight flaw(s).
I'll just hope it shows up, so I won't try to recall and address what I already did.

edit: My post did show up, whoo! It's -> post #14679

@paulrgod, thank you for letting me know you had a similar experience/batch/whatnot. I really do appreciate it. I mean yes, the smudges and everything, it seems exactly the same!
Even though it's not really good news in the ordinary sense...
But it somehow gives my mind some ease that someone has had a unit with similar.. let's say conditions, that has worked well so far.

Hopefully you don't mind I brought those little things to your attention..

@CoiL, Thank you for the suggestion, although it was definitely on my roadmap already.

I did indeed read every post since 1.5.0 fw release as I mentioned and the sound unlocked cfw really caught my mind. Without even trying it, the descriptions of the modifications by @medmitry made it clear to me it was oozing with quality and expertise. I've always enjoyed modding my devices and the fact that different FWs could influence the sound signature was one of the reasons I decided to acquire a DX50. I figured if the player wouldn't sound quite right with a fw, I would simply install another one. Fabulous, I think, especially since I also despise using software EQ in general since there will always be a reduction in quality. I am also curious about trying rockbox as I had it on my previous player, but one step at a time.. I think I'm gonna wait for the port to mature a bit even though I'm aware I could dual boot them.. Just because mango seems like a nice change for now. Ah, I'm getting carried away again. So yes, SU sounds excellent and especially the CPU clock speed mod has me very anxious to try it out. But I figured I'd try out my DX50 as a DAC on the official fw first before venturing into the realms of cfw.. And I just haven't had the time to get around to that, even though I'm definitely not discouraged about dseo/disabling driver signing. I don't exactly have a problem with doing more advanced stuff on the pc is all I'm saying, not meaning to show off or anything, just trying to save people time (aka no need to explain to me how to do it hehe).

Once again, thank you all for your replies (just in case the other post doesn't show up where I had replied to some of the peeps). Really makes one feel welcome.

And before I forget.. Well I was going to get into the fw observations, but I'll start with just two things first (WARNING: don't read this if you're a bit ocd like myself, ignorance might be a bliss [basically minor graphical glitch(es)]:
Has anyone noticed that after connecting DX50 to pc (only tried transfer mode so far) then disconnecting (on both 1.2.8 & 1.5.0), everything/most things on the screen move one line to the left?
basically connect to pc, leave sit for maybe a minute (not sure if necessary), disconnect, when it asks whether to scan or not i just press x (not sure if this has to do with it either, just making sure the steps are the same if someone will check)
It will be the most obvious on the black bar at the top, next to the battery. You'll see one vertical line of pixels (actual pixels can't go missing but you get my point ) is missing, obvious in the bar, looks like some elements moved to the left.. As I was testing this out while writing, I realized the bar fixes itself as soon as the screen sleeps so this might not bother most people after all (the other differences are not obvious/if not fixed as well).. Still even after the screen has turned off & most things are fixed, when you shut the player down, you can see a tiny white lines up and down on the very right edge. I know this is almost ridiculous and it doesn't bother even me, since I can always restart the player if it does start to annoy me and I won't be connecting it to the PC that often, BUT if someone has a good eye and feels like they could spare a few moments to check whether this happens on their DX50 too, well.. I could rest assured there's nothing wrong with the internals of my player.
Well this another one is obvious: I simply can't be the only one whose home/"house" button is reaally stretched on 1.5.0? This actually does bother me quite a bit after seeing how good it looked on 1.2.8, and I'm actually gonna look if I can extract the fw image at some point to fix this.. Everyone's probably
rolleyes.gif
by now. I get it.. I should just
atsmile.gif
to the damn thing, but.. I simply can't help myself noticing.. I have some good(/neutral?) news coming too, don't you guys worry. I'd just rather get these things away first, just so I can rest assured that there is nothing wrong with my player, save for a minor issue I already solved (the usb port thingy) [to clarify, I didn't actually fix/move the port, I just worked around the issue by getting rid of the pins(?) at the top of the plug on a microusb cable].

The new firmware really synergies well with the TH600s and smoothens out the harshness up top

I sent iBasso a note about the stuttering, and got a semi-helpful response: they sent me the batchtool .zip.  Only problem is that it is a Windows app and I use a Mac.  So that won't do much good.  I'm hoping trying/using a new mSD card will take care of it (not much of a problem, anyway).  I suppose when school starts up next week I could try my teacher computer, but my district locks down a lot of functions, so I'm not sure that would even work.
