The Astell & Kern AK120

What would be a typical use for the mini plug optical out that is shared with the headphone jack? If you were outputting digital to a preamp - wouldn't it want to use it's own dac to play analog to your speakers? That would defeat the purpose of the AK120's dac conversion.

I use the optical out with external DACs. It works great with the Meridian Director and the Chord Hugo. Both of them sound better than the internal DAC. Of course with the Director you need an amp as well because it's line out only. I wouldn't buy a Digital Audio Player without this feature.

Anyway to get a Line Out signal with the AK120?

Yes turn it up to full... done.  If you want to get super picky and really love high output impedance line outs... get an inline resistor adapter like the Etymotic P2S adapter or any of the cheaper ones on eBay... boom line out :p

Thanks! :) I'll just go with the full volume route.

I was at the NY meet yesterday.  UE brought AK100, 120, and 240.

I liked 120 and 240 more, and compared with Fiio X3 and X5.  AK stomps Fiio based on listen session with UE reference monitors.

I am sure this has already been confirmed but with over 350 posts in this thread it would take someone waaaaay more patient than myself to find it.

Will the AK100 and/or AK120 accept 120GB Micro SD cards (despite what the website claims obviously).

I will be buying one or the other and this is a key point for me.

Thanks!

So the AK100 will also accept the 128GB cards, for a total of 288GB?

If so then that is the winner for me. I love the really tiny form factor!

Also, is there a setting for High Gain on these units? I listened to them recently at the NY Meet and the volume was a bit lower then I sometimes want when maxed out.

I am using digital out with a Lifatec mini toslink cable with my Devialet DAC/amp. I am getting very good sound quality but 192/24 files do not play (176/24 is o.k.). I would like to hear from other users that 192/24 digital out works for them.  How sensitive is it to the optical cables?

I use the AK100 optical out with my CEntrance HiFi M8 and my NAD preamp without any problems, even with
192/24 files. I have a few inexpensive toslink cables, and all of them work fine.
