Ahh the Windows 3.1 days, running Trumpet Winsock for a little PPPoE to connect to the Gopher servers...

My first home computing experience was somewhat later, near the end of 1998. It was on a Compaq Presario, which ran Windows 98 SE.

Of course it was a magical time. How many hours did I waste playing Myst? I have no idea. Also, unlike later machines which all seem to have the same tinny-sounding set of samples licensed from Roland in 1996, this computer had an FM synthesizer section for MIDI. I had a scoring program that let me play back what I'd written, and it sounded awesome on that thing.

We gave it to my uncle a while ago and got it back after my uncle got a new machine. I'm considering getting it going again, though I'll need a new restore disc since I'm pretty sure the original one has been lost to time. I know a place where I can get a copy of it, for the princely sum of $27. I'll also need some new thermal grease, since the original stuff has long since dried out and turned black.

Linux works the best on old 98 class machines and any computer or electronics repair shop will have some heat sink compound.

I will refrain from regaling you with stories of the old days of Windows 3.1 and even earlier. You young'uns have no appreciation for the hardships us pioneers went through! Slogging 10 miles through the snow just to buy a book (an actual paper book!) on configuring the memory manager so we could load the TCP/IP stack...

Now get off my lawn, you d@mn kids!!

:p

Doing this reminds me how much I miss photoshop/gimp. Now I have a reason to at least once a month.
