PC Enthusiast-Fi (PC Gaming/Hardware/Software/Overclocking)

LOL. Don't mess with Avast, seriously. Last time I used it was three years ago when it spooked everyone in the bedroom when we're about to sleep. It says something like "virus definitions updated." Scary as ****, especially when it does it when you least expect it.

Just use something like MSE.

Avast is working fine.

Software is much different from three years ago dude.

Some consumers have an adverse effect to using a security product from Microsoft themselves. Feels cheap and not as safe to them.

Been a happy ESET NOD32 user for many years now, maybe 7-8 years or so. Probably the least intrusive antivirus I know of. The only times I notice is when there's a small popup box showing "virus definitions has been updated to version x.x.xxx at the taskbar"

#1 Thing I dislike about most forum PC Gamers

The 'because it happens to me', then ' it must happen to everyone' logic and idea.

First of all the article:
http://www.maximumpc.com/bragging_rights_pc_gaming_market_maintains_sales_lead_over_consoles_2014

The biggest claim it makes is on PC Gaming Hardware market being bigger than consoles. OBVIOUSLY. For Consoles, you just buy the damn thing and boom. That's it.

Also it notes the massive effect low end gaming has on the numbers that are being pushed out.

The article title should read "Farmville Users and those that need to go to the store to buy a new mouse, keyboard, or other PC accessory has a market larger than the market of Console accessory parts"

I
It scared me is what it was. Made me think it was a fake program that changed its name to look like MB.

Really? I thought it looked nice. Its not the best design but its better than before (I have no preference to either right now).

Just downloaded Avira for a client computer. First time using it .....in like years

Good reviews as one of the better free AVs out there.

BUT What did they do to it? Did they crapify Consumerfi and make it mobile style popouts as well?

EDIT:
http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&postID=1293462

Yep. They crapified consumerfied, signupfied first AVIRA.

Uninstalled you POS softwares that I used to always use.

It only installs the dashboard thing when you 'install' AVIRA. You then need to go through another process of signing up and managing through online interface to get everything.

Next trial AV. AVAST.

EDIT:

WHAT THE FRICKING ****. AVASTs download link, links you to CNETs stupid adware laced installer platform.

WHAT....THE ...HELL.

edit:

Last chance for AVAST. Downloading it though Ninite. If it is also a piece of schiit-fi, consumer-fi, signup-fi software like AVIRA. It's going to the graveyard of software I never install on client builds or my own again.

Finally got it. PSA for all those that need to instal AV for client builds but can't/don't use MSE. Use Ninite to get AVAST and unless you want a headache, don't go AVIRA.

I'd check both. Anyways, Panda Cloud Antivirus (Free) shot up to the top. Qihoo 360 has been up there for awhile (no English version yet, I think). I still use Avast (I switched to AVG Free on my laptop but didn't like the UI and the ads). Sticking with Avast.

Really? I never had a problem with installing Avast. I would be taken to the Cnet page but it never used a Cnet-laced installer for me.

Just use something like MSE.

Why are people still recommending MSE? It's pure garbage now.

Anyways, you really can't just go through the options and turn off the voice? There was an option to in the old and new UI.

You could also just leave it on silent mode all day which is what I do.

The computer I was fixing was laced with fake software.

MalwareBytes was pre-installed already (they never used it)and the new UI made me think it was another fake for a few seconds.

Yeah, I saw that chart. I used that chart to decide on which AV to use. However I went with the 3 most popular off the top of my head before I go to others. They were AVG, AVAST, and Avira. Why? This is a client fix. They like names they have heard or others will fully recognize more than ones that are a bit more 'hidden'.

The same reason why people are still recommending Ad Aware.

  best antivirus = no antivirus

no antivirus has been keeping my pc running fast and healthy for years!  highly recommended

Pretty much this. My current machine has no antivirus on it. My wife's has Microsoft Security Essentials and it does a fine job. I've had to remove one virus before for her but that was due to her own actions. She even suspected it was a virus before installing a software package but continued to install it anyways. /palm. I have Kaspersky on my parent's computer because they don't understand much about antivirus and internet security measures.

Why people still think MSE is good is beyond me...they really need to stop thinking that. Its baseline protection (no AV) now. Get something better for real-time protection.

Of course, good browsing habits works wonders but it won't work against everything.

I half agree. I personally don't roll with any real AV. But that doesn't mean there isn't one in the shadows.

There are a lot of things that enthusiasts can do and still be unsafe that good AVs can prevent. We like to toy with questionably sourced files as well and often times. Having an AV there as your Jesus pal as you are about to pick the green or red wire in detonating (unraring) that file is nice to know.

Only Windows Defender (the re re-branded MSE for Windows 8 and above) is active on my computer and I'm sure most of yours. And it does a decent job of being my non-intrusive, never talks, no pop ups, no stupid random ass scans, not asking me to pay, or stupid UI wingman Jesus for when I use my computer.

Anything important to me is sent to the Pearly Gates of Cloud Heaven and media is stored on other HDDs (they aren't important anyway).

If SOMETHING REALLY terrible happens to my computer that even lord Satan MalwareBytes and his friends of Rkill, Combofix, SuperAnti, Ad Aware can't fix and his Greek friends in using Linux Live CDs cant fix. Then I just nuke my computer and start over again.

No need to image or re-image. I'm not in a corporate enviroment where this will be worth my time. Plus my hardware changes too often for it to work perfectly well.  My wingman Jesus Cloud has all my stuff saved and downloaded and installable through Ninite as Microsoft repulls my settings from my Microsoft account.

I then replug my physical HDDs (not partitions) and ext HDDs and life goes on.

I just realized 360 finally put up and English website with English versions of their AV! Awesome!

I might move to this or Panda Cloud (Panda Cloud is a bit heavier but shouldn't be a problem with a nice SSD). 360 Internet Security has a really nice interface though.

I have bad memories of 360.

Mainly from all the virus ladded Chinese laptops I've seen in where they've used it.

You have some terrible experience with software. I've never had any problems with a lot of the free antiviruses.

Chinese laptops are filled with all sorts of garbage. You might be thinking about the 360 Secure Browser a lot of people in China use since that ads a lot of crap like this desktop news thing or something and a bunch of other stuff.

Mainly because I worked in a computer repair shop and am Mr. GET OVAH HIER TO FIX MAH COMPUDER during family reunions.

No.... I'm thinking of the 360 AV that you are talking about.

It wasn't a bad AV. Just that every computer that had it on had a schiit tons of viruses. Not that that is indicative of bad AV. Just bad memories.
