Sennheiser MOMENTUM Review
Jul 18, 2014 at 8:42 PM Post #3,196 of 3,594
Got to go back on my previous comment. Today I listen to the momentum on my left ear and the 558 on my right. Listened to the same source will no delay and the audio meshed. I would now say the momentum has equal sound to the 558. I didn't like the the 558 let outside noise come in but didn't enjoy it's air sound. So to conclude the momentum are portable 558s with closed back

I tested the Momentums over ear with my HTC one and I used my power amp app and also turned on beats audio,(I know beats audio) and I have to say but the bass and clarity blew away the V moda M100s simply I am damn impressed in how much bass these headphones can handle with no distortion and awsome clarity :D

Overall, what impresses me about both the Momentum and On-ear is the fact that they take to EQ extremely well. In my eyes, that is what separates the consumer headphones and the audiophiles.

I have a feeling that you might like a pair of Orthodynamic cans (Planar Magnetics). These are not light or as portable as the Momentums, ahh but the sound. For every hour my Momentum Over Ears get to visit my noggin, my HE-500's get 500 hours. I use my Momentums when I need to use a decent set of cans that have isolation. The HE-500's do not leave the house, the Momentums can easily hit the road.

I would like some planar magnetic headphones but the price is pritty high thats why I like the Momentums so much. 1. Amazing sound for the price I would spend $600 for these headphones straight out, if you get a bargain well you hit the jackpot. 2. The ergonomics of the headphone are outstanding but if you do have bigger ears it's a different story but for me 10/10. 3. Portability yes they don't fold and the case is a bit on the big side but because the headphones are so light you can easily wear them around your neck. 4. The look simply can't offend anything haha yes the black & red would appeal more to a younger crowd the Ivory do look more inbetween the black & brown so I think anyone can wear them and the brown would suit a more classy or higher end person aka wearing them while you are wearing a nice suit around the city. But with all the colours they all look great and never get out of fashion but for me personally the brown are my choice.5. Durability these cans are tough yes they are not the toughest but they can take a beating but who would want to beat up these amazing headphones pritty stupid if you ask me. So what I am saying is that these headphones live up to there price and are well worth it and if you find them cheaper and brand new simply get them. But it's always best to try before you buy :)

I suspect that some good deals will be popping up soon for a used set of HE-500's on the FS forum as the new HE-560's are just out. You know how most of us just have to get the new model. The soundstage on open backs are earopeners. If you have noisy window mounted AC, the lack of isolation might be a downside. They also require more power from an amp than the Momentums. But oh the sound....

Hey guys,
Well I've finally got my refund of $AU235 sorted and I've been looking through catchoftheday.com.au and they're selling a pair of Yamaha HPH-MT220s for $129.99! I've had my eye on these for a short while since my friend who owns a pair has been telling me about how much he likes these.

Down to the point. Sennheiser momentums vs Yamaha HPH-MT220s based purely on sound alone as I like both these cans. What pair are worth the money?
Should I save AU$105.01 and get the MT220s or are the momentums worth every penny?

The perks of the momentums detachable cable + the added portability is a plus but realistically I wouldn't be taking them out and about very often but I have to admit that I like the look of the momentums more.

If I choose to go for the MT220's the remaining $105 will be going towards a 32gb iPod touch.

EDIT: I might just be thinking this because of the "savings"

Make sure the Touch you get is the 5G (5th Generation) version. It can drive an external DAC via a Lightning CCK cable, possibly requiring a powered USB hub with some DACs. It can drive a FiiO E18 without a powered hub or Y cable/battery, very portable and sounds very good. Actually the 5G sounds rather good on it's own and easily makes the Momentums light up.

Yeah, i sure will.
I'll probably only buy one if see one selling for a stellar deal. If not, I'll wait for the 6 generation to come out eventually. I'm not in a huge rush.

In terms of headphones tho, what pair do you think I should go for?

I've had my Momentums for about 4 months now and I love them more every day. Listen to them for about 2 hours every night going threw my 50 year music collection and hearing new things in every recording. Low impedance and high sensitivity mean no extra amp needed. I can't see you ever being disappointed in the Momentums over the ear. Lots of great prices on eBay now.

I think there's been a recent price reduction, check it out, ah the temptation.

Please folks I'm about to puke reading all these posts on the trama over what color to get, the style, will they go with the color of my pants, misplaced sewing etc, etc, etc.
Can we please get back to discussing sound quality, tech issues, etc. This isn't GQ or some chicks fashion magazine.

Has anyone actually tried those with hi-end gear? I wonder how they'd compare when facing HD800, for example... I know they're up a completely different alley and all, but curiosity tickles me.
