Hey OP. Read your other thread "perfect headphones for $300" and at the end you said you were set on the Denon D2000. Did you not buy them?

No, I started reading it over again and honestly, I did a horrible job on the search.

Going by your post count, I'm really surprised you still haven't found a headphone to suit you. Have you auditioned any and what were your impressions? Just goes to show how hard it is to find the right one, especially for the genres we listen to. It's hard to know which artists record their songs properly and which ones don't. I'm still searching. Ordered some CAL!'s off amazon as they are 33% off. Also looking at some ultrasone HFI 580. Dunno if either will be good, but If I don't try I wont know.

Unless you missed it. It looks very interesting and if it works I'll definitely be buying it. Need the extra bass for pop groups like AAA and for immersion in Anime, but need more forward vocals for rock groups like Scandal. Can't wait.

Since you bought the CAL, I'd say that you would be satisfied with it for a while, such as I did. I find that the CAL have just enough bass for pop but the vocals a a little bit recessed, IMO. Not by a lot, I still like vocals in songs that doesn't demand bass in it, but when there's bass it's slightly overtook by bass. Of course this is all IMO, and all to my taste, grain of salt needed.

Really hope I am satisfied with them. I'd love to find something that my ears will love at this price. The general feeling I get (though no fault of the head-fi members) is that you have to spend a lot to get the best sound. So many times I've threatened my wallet with the purchase of a D2000, shure 940, HD598, and all the other very expensive (imo) phones that I would never have thought of spending before I joined here.

Just start somewhere small first, and see what you like. I find that the CAL is quite balanced (note I said balanced not neutral. I don't know what that sounds like tbh :p) in regards to the bass, mids and treble, maybe IMO the treble and mids are a bit lacking, but just a bit. From there, I think you should be able to decide what kind of sound signature you like.

The HD598 is a good headphone too. I got to try my friends' HD598 and HD558, and found them more open than my CAL (of course they are) and better mids, but I missed that little bit of sparkle that is slightly recessed compared to my CAL.

Bottom line IMO you're set for now. Also how much did you get your's?

Well I my first pairs of headphones/earphones were the soundmagic e10 and sennheiser HD558. I bought the senns because they were supposed to be mid centric and have good "bass and vocal projection" (whatever that means). I found them to be extremely boring, and veiled. They just lacked any energy. The soundstage wasn't as impressive as people make it sound. The E10's were supposed to be an excellent first earphone, described as "bass monsters" by some on this forum but again I find them to be rather dull and lacking any sort of occasion. They aren't bassy enough for me to consider them as basshead phones, and they're too thick to give vocals any sort of sparkles. Have the KSC75's as well but they don't work with the "j" category, not for me.

Currently I have the Panasonics HTF600, described by some as being better than the CAL's, which would be annoying. They are enjoyable but something is just missing. Clarity isn't very good, and when songs get complicated they don't really separate the sounds so It just sounds like a bit of a mess. Still enjoyable to a degree, but I can't afford to keep them.

I got the CAL's for £40, used to be £60. Panny's were £30 so normally half the price.

That's cheaper than what I get. Good for you. Well I haven't heard nor owned a HTF600, so no comment there, but I kind of agreed there with the HD558. While the mids are oh so sweet, the highs that complete the awesomeness of most of my j-songs aren't really there.

Since you have the ksc75, why not try all the simple mods for it? You'd be surprised with the result, like how I'm surprised with my portapros. I still haven't done the kramer mod to it though. Well if you want to continue, I suggest we PM, don't want to derail this thread more. :)

I'm sure we are doing the OP a favour by bumping his thread
wink.gif
And you can only PM once a day (I think)

I'm not really interested in modding, especially when it costs more money, as Id rather spend that money on a better phone, plus it also voids the warranty. I just want something that works out of the box. You mention in your profile that you love your midrange. What kind of "j" songs do you listen to? I'm interested to see how they sound.

Post count doesn't mean much. I spend most, if not all of my time in the Japanese Anime/Manga/Music thread I made. :)

These new Beyers are definitely interesting. I have time to burn because I'm probably not going to purchase anything until the summer so new things are welcome.

It's a great help. I actually didn't know if I should bump this thread or not after I posted that "it was time to put on the blindfold" which meant I just need to pick out of the ones listed.

I personally wouldn't be satisfied with the ones that were listed. The Kenwoods are expensive, hard to source, and if you don't like them you're stuck with it since you can't return it. I have a small head and the denon's were too big for me. Felt like they were about to slip off. I only got to sample them so can't really make a good judgement on them but for their price they didn't instantly blow me away which I expected them to. I've tried the a700x and a500, and I didn't like the ergonomics. It kept slipping off my ears. They had a surprisingly decent amount of bass though. Soundstage felt quite big from memory. From the review of the koss they sound like they have forward vocals and are intimate, but then they would only be suitable for listening to music. Which types exactly, I'm not sure, but they wouldn't be suitable for watching anime as well if that's what you are after.

What kind of attributes are you looking for? Do you want something bass heavy, v-shaped, mid-centric, or neutral? I don't really like the vocaloids that you posted, don't really listen to that genre, but with my Panasonic HTF600's they sounded good. Really good seperation and I could hear everything clearly.

My best advice would be to try as many headphones as you can. I don't know where you live so I don't know what equipment you have access to. Before I started buying anything, I didn't know about all these sound signatures and how different things sounded etc... I just thought if I spend a decent amount of money I'd be blown away. I wasn't so in a way the money I've spent has been kind of wasted but I have a better Idea now of what I'm looking for than I did before.

Any more links of the type of rock or pop songs you like?

I wasn't really all that happy about picking blind. The thought of no return for the Kenwoods scared me so I'm probably not going to get those. I did try the Denon's (AH-D2000 and AH-D5000) when I was in Japan. I'm fine with them. I like how they don't pinch your head and I won't be moving much when I'm using these cans since I'm going to be at home.

Personal opinion on what you like to listen to. Anyways, Vocaloids and most Japanese music tend to focus on the mids and highs. I'd like strong mids and highs but great bass would be good too, so that kind of describes an all around headphone which would be the D2K's but I remember earlier something about recessed mids or something about these headphones. I don't know, I'll have to look.

Oooooo You've been to Nihon? So jealous.

I wish Audio technica would just release a headphone and specifically advertise it for Japanese songs. Can't believe it's so hard to find the right headphone from AT. Non of their models seem to really suit me. Any idea of what people in Japan buy?

Huh? As far as I know, Audio-Technica works very well with Japanese music. Their main audience is the Japanese populace that listens inevitably to Japanese music for most cases.

From all the sub 4000yen headphones in Japan available at BicCamera (2008?) I chose the ATH-SJ5. Now That I own better cans I can veriu say that they have a unnatural timbre but they were the best for the price range back then at the store. That's not saying much though, since for the perhaps 50 models there were around, maybe was 15 or so in the price range I was then looking for. But AT is pretty good at vocals, which would explain why they work well with Japanese music in my book.

The major bulk of my music preference is similar to yours, btw. A lot of my preferences are affected by games though so I have a lot of KOKIA, Shikata Akiko, Shoji Meguro, Falcom JDK, etc. Lots of Perfume and Vocaloid stuff too, so you can somewhat picture how I choose my headphones!

Not a full sized one but PortaPro's are good too! Lol. But, Hybrid, what headphones are you coming from? <---- main question

Very often they pick Victor... That's like the Japan-only JVC.
And very often they pick headphones based on value. Now this is talking about average consumers.

EDIT: This week at the equivalent to BestBuy (but with much larger quality headphone variety)--this figures both your average consumer that often don't want to spend a lot on headphones, and audiophiles to some extent.

Most popular headphones (overall): Sony MDR-ZX700
Fullsize: JVC-Kenwood HP-RX900, Sony MDR-C900ST
Runner-ups: Pioneer SE-MJ551, Pioneer SE-M290, Sony MDR-XD100, Panasonic RP-HT260, Sony MDR-ZX1000

Surprising, two years ago Sony was hardly ever on the highest popularity ranking. But I hear good things about the ZX700. The other two... not sure about their availability in NA.
You'll notice that most of these are fairly inexpensive headphones, the most expensive (in Japan) being the ZX1000 --> ZX700 --> JVC-Kenwood HP-RX900

Not looking at the ranking itself and by volume of sales, Sennheiser HD598 is there too. Audio-Technica is hardly ever on ranking xP
