Android phones and USB DACs

Is it the DAC chip or the USB controller chip that is the important issue and then there is the audio class compatibility to consider.

AFAIK it's the USB receiver. I've used several units with ES9023 (including the mentioned HifiMe one) paired with Android without any problems.

rad7 The Zuperdac does drain the battery quite fast.

Ah, my bad didn't notice. I'm afraid I haven't used N on any device yet, seems as if Google are still making things hard for us.

N is the bane of the USB Android DAC.

Just wanted to show you guys my new mobile combo.
Works pretty great.
The aegis is the perfect mobile dac for me.
Many people have written, that it only has 7 volume steps,
but for me every step of the android 30 step bar works.
I also just build this usb c to micro usb otg adapter yesterday
using some super hardening putty so that the Aegis
stays firm on the back side of my phone.
I will probably just grind the adapter a little to give it a nicer
form and paint it dark grey afterwards.

I just got OnePlus 3T and want to try it with my Meridian Explorer² USB DAC. I've had mixed success with my other phones. My Moto X Play wouldn't recognize it all. But my old Oppo Find 7a works just fine. The OTG adapter I use is this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-5-Inch-Micro-Female-Adapter/dp/B00B4GGW5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490975888&sr=8-1&keywords=startech+micro+usb+to+usb+otg

I'm wondering if it would work with the new phone using the USB type C OTG cable that OnePlus are offering:

https://oneplus.net/ca_en/oneplus-type-c-otg-cable

Or do I need something else, possibly an adapter that would allow me to connect a power bank too?

Anyone else using a USB DAC with this phone?

I'm a bit confused now since it seems that playing audio via USB on Android can be a bit of a mess.

I'm thinking about getting a used DragonFly Red. I'm predominantly going to be playing streaming music via Amazon Prime (it's free for me and I don't want to pay money for Tidal).

I have some Westone W60s that I think would benefit from this DAC.

- People seem to be using special apps like UAPP to play their music, but I'll be playing predominantly through the Amazon Prime app. Is this a big problem?

- Is the battery drain going to be an issue? I understand that there's no way to charge the phone AND play audio via OTG at the same time, so this point is going to be the same for all OTG USB DACs.

Does the use of USB-C allow for both charging the phone and using the DAC at the same time? Or is the problem not so much the wiring as it is just Android being dumb?

Why is Apple's Lightning port able to do this and not Android's micro-USB and/or USB-C?

I'm pretty sure it is a hardware issue (or possibly USB OTG specification) as I have had an Android device that could be charged and use USB OTG at the same time with a Y-cable. There are also some devices that can be 'tricked' into charging whilst using USB OTG, usually this involves some sort of set procedure for connection or some sort of switching arrangement.

It's not just Android as I have had a couple of Windows tablets that charge over micro-USB, one could be charged whilst using the USB OTG the other could only do OTG or charge but not both at the same time.

Lightning has obviously been designed and implemented to do both.

You'll be limited by the Android Sound Layer of the device you use, whether that's a fixed 16/44, 24/96 or set to the highest your DAC can do, depending on your phone.

What phone are you using?

I don't think OTG exists in USB 3.1. I think the new spec is called Legacy Device Adapter.

I run through a big decrapifier chain that kills my S5 at nearly 1% a min.
Ifi ipurifier2 Intona. I am experimenting with the Ipurifier and defender. But these are designed for computer usb sockets pass through plugs, not from otg.I had to by 2 reverser adapters...The point being with this sorry... Is the I defender has a micro usb port you can bypass the phone battery 5v and inject from a Battery pack. (kills ground loops also GND lift)
Works well just bloody messy looking.Described as a model train wrecK. .

On a side note UAAP if not already mentioned now has MQA decoding yer...
What ever you think of it it worked perfect for my MYTEK BROOKLYN.
Almost redbook decoding and pcm file tidy up... (Crass MQA SYNOPSIS)
Meridian ET AL Dacs now maybe worth paying the extra on Tidal??? if you have that genre in the growing list.

Just a quick hello to the best Android music thread in the world:blush:

Have fun all
Cheers
Dave

internal of a onE stop fix box same thing but you dont need the ifi but not as much battery life as my 20000 Mah pack. just plug in usb b out usb A
So 5v bypass and a battery charging circuit. More cleaning computer 5v than phone 5v but acts the same for otg battery bypass. Another toy I might pass on with my growing list of SQ experiments.
