So how will this benefit us turok? I don't get it :p.

I'd say it's downright irrelevant if you own a DX100 but don't have a USB dac that is superior to the mighty Sabre ESS in the DX100. For my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, however, this could be useful!

Hello all,

I'm new to this thread but thought I'd let you know that I've finally given up waiting for the Hifiman HM-901 to be released and instead ordered a DX100. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week.

I'm finding more and more that the treble roll-off on my HM-801 is troubling me and find I'm actually resorting more to my J3 with the UM Miracles (but missing the fullness of sound as a major trade-off).

Thanks all for this great thread which has helped to convince me to take the iBasso plunge.

I'll let you know how I get on with the sound; I have high hopes!

Well, I've managed to hold off posting my early impressions for a couple of weeks, but here they are...

I was really hoping that the DX100 would help me move nearer to audio nirvana.....    and it has! In spades!!
I don't know whether it's just a great match to the Miracles but this thing is truly superb. In short, I could not be happier. I've been listening, listening and listening. Just fabulous. I'm so glad I didn't wait for the 901.

Now, a quick summary of the sound compared to my 801. Well, for a start, it's far more spacious. Instruments are really clearly separated. It's easy to follow every element of the music individually and this means I'm noticing things that I've no doubt heard before, but not been able to distuinguish so easily. Then the balance of the sound. To my ears, it sounds just right; crisp highs, natural mids and full but not overbearing bass. All together, it just sounds so right. I was worried that I'd lose the "body" that the 801 gave, but I needn't have been. In fact, the bass bloom has gone. All together far more involving, personal and balanced. Really nice. Lee, you were absolutely right!

Rightly or wrongly, I find that I prefer the sound using a 6.3mm adaptor. The sound seems to move a little closer to me and therefore be that bit more involving. I've also settled on 88.2 khz upsampling. This too (for me) provides a little more "bite". Using low gain too.

Operationally, it's like night and day to the 801. I thought I'd miss physical buttons but the nice display with album art is great (works fine with flac, mp3 and m4a but not wma for some reason). Storage, too, is great. I added a 64gb card (fomatted quickly to FAT32 by EaseUS Partition Master) so carrying around more than 12000 tracks is super.

So far my only niggle is that it takes an absolute age to become responsive if I turn it off and on again. I keep getting a message (can't remember exactly what it is) asking if I want to close the Music app or wait. I keep hitting wait repeatedly and finally, after 10 mins or so, it springs to life again. I've shut down everything I can think of, not installed anything, no wifi etc (maybe I need to root it, but will look at that one day...).

By the way, great service from Toxic Cables in the UK (via eBay). I'd recommend them if you're in the UK and thinking of buying. Thanks all, a great thread, and I'm glad I read most of it. It really helped me make the right decision.

Happy listening!

Nice review and great impressions. On the time to access, I find that just letting it open before hitting anything, allows it to open up faster, normally about 2 minutes or less. If I hit Wait, it seems to take longer but that only pops up if I have tried to use the DX before it is ready.

Ah, thanks. I'll give that a go in the morning.

Hmm mine takes about a minute to boot up and be fully functional. Actually on firmware 1.1.7 it was a little faster in booting in my case. But you don't have as good of sound nor album art support. Also the pops are louder . There maybe something up with your tags Tony. You can look at my mp3tag guide or even find it listed in the DX100 FAQ page.

I have the DX100 and Vsonic GR07's. I feel that the GR07's do not have synergy with the DX100. What headphones or IEMs would anyone recommend with the DX100. I want to be able to use the DX100 for exercise on a treadmill and not look strange with a large headphones but do not want to sacrifice sound quality.

The Tralucent 1Plus2 and Fit Ear 334 both sound good out of the DX100. I also heard the Heir 8A really pairs well out of them. My MDR-7550s also sound quite good out of them. IMO they are noticeably better than the GR07.

I'm yet to try a set of headphones that didn't sound good with the DX100. However, some prefer their headphones (like Grado SR325i or BD T70) with the added warmth and coloration of a tube amp or warm sounding source. The DX100 has no such coloration, that might be why your GR07 doesn't have "synergy" with the DX100

Sorry to be OT but if you had to pick one (between the TG!334 & 1Plus2) which would you pick and why?

Well AnakChan I have the older model currently and I still preferred it to the 334. The 1Plus2s are much more reminiscent of full size headphones. It has intimacy yet doesn't give you that in your head sound generally associated with IEMs. Plus I don't find it lacking at all in any area. Bass is phenomenal with such presence and control. The mids have a nice thickness to them and are somewhat upfront without going overboard. The treble is very detailed yet smooth. Not missing any detail in the treble and there is a lot of sparkle still. Just you won't get fatigued on long listening sessions. The sound stage is very open and on higher end sources these IEMs really scale well. The word I use to describe them is "realism". It just feels like you are there with the singers live. You get the best of both worlds. The prat, detail and precision of BA along with the textured and full bodied bass only known to high end dynamic drivers. Best of all you aren't giving up anything. I've noticed hybrids have suffered from coherency issues (I felt this way about the AKG3003). That is not the case at all with the 1Plus2s. It is seamless. Hard to believe they pulled it off. In the end if I was to do a blind test I would be more apt to think these are very detailed dynamic IEMs and not BA.

I am getting the new model so I'll be able to make more comparisons then along with Saraguie and his 334s. The fact that I'm being told the newer model makes the older one sound muffled in comparison is quite shocking to be honest because I don't find them muffled at all (continuing to raise my standards and the bar . But my opinion still stands. Hell I got rid of my W3000 ANVs to fund these babies and I feel they are better IMO than even those headphones. To take it even further the 1Plus2s have  made me very unsatisfied with my other gear and prompted me to sell off my beloved IE80s (silver cable and tape modded). There is just no comparison at all. Even the MDR-7550s next to them sound small and lacking in comparison. They are like toys next to them. That is why I jumped on the Heir 8A sale as I've been lusting for those for a long time and think they will at least be able to satisfy me as a second IEM. Nothing like listening to gear and then being really disappointed in that said gear.

The situation is similar in regards to the UHA6 I just sold lol. Although it is a great amp it just doesn't hold a candle to the Triad. Nor does it compare on the DX100 to the Tralucent T1 (synergy at its best).

Hi,

Does anyone know how the DX100 sounds with a Grado PS1000?

Regards

I listen regularly with HF-2's and RS-1's.  I think the DX100 is a good fit for the Grado house sound...and it appears to provide plenty of current for them to sound the way they should without an additional amp.
