Hello all,
I'm new to this thread but thought I'd let you know that I've finally given up waiting for the Hifiman HM-901 to be released and instead ordered a DX100. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week.
I'm finding more and more that the treble roll-off on my HM-801 is troubling me and find I'm actually resorting more to my J3 with the UM Miracles (but missing the fullness of sound as a major trade-off).
Thanks all for this great thread which has helped to convince me to take the iBasso plunge.
I'll let you know how I get on with the sound; I have high hopes!
Tony
Well, I've managed to hold off posting my early impressions for a couple of weeks, but here they are...
I was really hoping that the DX100 would help me move nearer to audio nirvana..... and it has! In spades!!
I don't know whether it's just a great match to the Miracles but this thing is truly superb. In short, I could not be happier. I've been listening, listening and listening. Just fabulous. I'm so glad I didn't wait for the 901.
Now, a quick summary of the sound compared to my 801. Well, for a start, it's far more spacious. Instruments are really clearly separated. It's easy to follow every element of the music individually and this means I'm noticing things that I've no doubt heard before, but not been able to distuinguish so easily. Then the balance of the sound. To my ears, it sounds just right; crisp highs, natural mids and full but not overbearing bass. All together, it just sounds so right. I was worried that I'd lose the "body" that the 801 gave, but I needn't have been. In fact, the bass bloom has gone. All together far more involving, personal and balanced. Really nice. Lee, you were absolutely right!
Rightly or wrongly, I find that I prefer the sound using a 6.3mm adaptor. The sound seems to move a little closer to me and therefore be that bit more involving. I've also settled on 88.2 khz upsampling. This too (for me) provides a little more "bite". Using low gain too.
Operationally, it's like night and day to the 801. I thought I'd miss physical buttons but the nice display with album art is great (works fine with flac, mp3 and m4a but not wma for some reason). Storage, too, is great. I added a 64gb card (fomatted quickly to FAT32 by EaseUS Partition Master) so carrying around more than 12000 tracks is super.
So far my only niggle is that it takes an absolute age to become responsive if I turn it off and on again. I keep getting a message (can't remember exactly what it is) asking if I want to close the Music app or wait. I keep hitting wait repeatedly and finally, after 10 mins or so, it springs to life again. I've shut down everything I can think of, not installed anything, no wifi etc (maybe I need to root it, but will look at that one day...).
By the way, great service from Toxic Cables in the UK (via eBay). I'd recommend them if you're in the UK and thinking of buying. Thanks all, a great thread, and I'm glad I read most of it. It really helped me make the right decision.
Happy listening!
Tony
