You had a fake ZX700, 100% sure of that if you say it had poor res and no bass slam. The ZX700 and Z1000 have excellent imaging and are regarded as such for it and has good bass kick that is rock solid. The mids are powerful, extremely large and broad. The highs were sharp and the bass was a bit muddy, but for $70 used? Nothing comes close. Tyll enjoyed them, the ZX700 has insane capabilities for modding, the earpads are severely limiting their potential. Their drivers are angled and with proper dampening that costs all but $5-10 at the crafts store, you should be able to replicate the Kees mod or something similar to reduce the sharper highs and up the bass. Angled drivers with flat earpads and cups makes no sense, with the addition of the Hifiman velors, the results are excellent for soundstaging. I am a bit concerned a few users didn't pick up on what I was trying to get at, i thought I was clear on what I was talking about. The L1 is now being regarded as having an excellent sound stage, it does. It sounds immensely good everywhere, its bested in soundstaging qualities by the ZX700 with the HE300 pads. The sound is noticeably larger, more spacious and more dynamic. The Zx700 mids are massive and significantly taller and more spacious sounding than the L1. The L1 is more clear, smoother and with more bass, but I'll never know what they can achieve as they made sure you can't modify it or swap pads out. The pads are permanent, you cant remove them without damaging the set.
This and Phillips immensely poor service in the marketing department were upsetting. Phillips is the first audio company in the past decade that I've tried to contact that ignored every call, message and email left to them. Latoya, one of their marketing managers should be fired immediately, just my view on it. Immensely uncaring and poor response yet from a MARKETING agent. The L1 is without question the best overall experience I've had with headphones in the past decade. Its the closest to perfect I've come across. Its sexy, immensely well built rivaling the Edition 8 in materials used in the headband and brackets, its comfortable for unlimited use, its well rounded for all genres and offers a great warmness to the low end with no overshadowing of the excellent moderately forward mids and highs. Its also the least sibilant $300 headphone I've ever used with the blackest background I've heard in years. The exposed squiggly cable over the earcups and the lack of slightly angled removable earpads are the only things I could gripe about. So much for not being able to review it, I guess. Thats about as far as I was able to get with it before the accident. Cant use headphones or iems for a long time so thats really all I can say for the time being, if some users want my incomplete review, drop me a Private Message. If I get enough, I can copy and paste what I had written up to that point, which was enough to get the gist of what the headphone is and how it sounds.
