hd650 or hd800

As good as the HD800s are, I am still very treble sensitive and the HD800s induce fatigue very quickly for me - same as the K701s in that regard...I guess some people just aren't as sensitive in the treble.  I find the HD800 a double edged sword...as magnificent as it sounds in the upper mids and treble it is the same strength that causes fatigue with me very quickly...but on fresh ears - I do get blown away on specific recordings like nothing else.  They're strictly low level cans for me - providing the volume stays low, I can enjoy them for extended periods - enjoy them I did.

I had the same problem with the HD800 (too hot treble/high mids). Sold them and got the T1 - and I really ADORE the T1!!

The T1 is to me a slightly warmer, slightly bassier and slightly less treble-hot version of HD800, but without loosing detail. When HD800 forces the detail onto you, the T1 just lets the detail flow. And soundstaging is also great. And separation. Slightly more intimate than the HD800, but plenty of that 3D effect.

But seems like SP Wild is of another opinion.

I run the T1 on a Grace m902 amp, by the way. HD800 being 300 and T1 being 600 ohm...

Anyway, now I've got the HD650 and the T1 and they complement each other fabulously,

To me issues with the HD800 was the SPC cable. As soon as I changed to the DHC Complement OCC or the AphroditeCu29 Zeus also OCC the high midrange energy and slight sibliance went away and became a very smooth and great sounding pair of cans. Compared to my Zeus T1 it is really a toss up. It depends on the kind of music you are going to listen and the mood you are in at that moment. IMO either one with the right cable are far betther than the HD650 (that I used to own and used with aftermarket balanced cable).

The only real problem I have with the T1s is that I feel they are not a true "open" can design, they sound semi-closed to me - and I feel this causes some limitations...I simply prefer the open can feel of the HD800 and LCD2 a little more.  Other than that, they sound absolutely fantastic with a more "neutral" and intimate tone than the HD800 and a treble that is crisp yet fatigue free and a very tight and rhythmic bass, overall very much up there with the very best.

I challenge you to compare the HD650 to the T1 and see if you cannot pickup the more "open" can character of the HD650 - albeit with an inferior driver speed.

Great to hear someone not being extremist about comparing the two German masters

BTW, I find an urge to comment on the following:

People seem to ignore the fact that aftermarket cables such as the DHC Complement cost a lot of money (730 USD for 8 feet + shipping and tax - for those of us outside the US).

I got my T1's for $870- NEW in Norway (demo; full price is 980)....  There are cheaper cables (clone) but you easily spend 400 USD at least.

US-price (headroom) T1 = $1300, HD800 combo ($1400 + DHC Complement $730) = $2130.

HD800 combo is thus 60% more expensive.

Or put another way: You can get the T1HD650 and  Denon AH-D5000 for the price of the HD800 combo....

Sorry 'bout all the math..

The T1 is a semi-open construction, so it shouldn't surprise you that you feel that they are

I guess semi-open and semi-closed is the same, rather like a glass half full or half empty..

But I feel that the T1 is clearly on the OPEN side of semi.... (BTW - I really like the semi-openness of the T1 - needless to say, perhaps :)

As well they should, considering the people who sell those cables are crooks that don't spend more than $40 to make a cable that is inferior to the standard.

That is perhaps a bit strongly put. I am myself a cable-guy - upgrading interconnects or loudspeaker cables can make a lot more difference than upgrading the signal source for instance. I have not yet tried replacing HP-cables - but I will, and expect that a nice cable can make a nice can sound even nicer. Anyway -  cables should only be discussed by people who actually have auditioned them. My opinion, that is.

x2.

On a different note, I really feel the HD800 are in a class of their own. Technically, they're the best cans I've heard. The LCD-2 with a cable upgrade may be just as good if not better, but in their stock form, I prefer my recabled HD800s over them.

Shahrose...buddy you're not helping me. LOL...I am tempted with the Moon Audio Silver Dragon upgrade to the LCD-2 stock cable and I didn't need the reminder. Silver would be perfect IMO with the LCD-2s and help the treble/sense of air.

I had extended listening last year with these 2 headphones and it only took me 10 minutes to know which is the better. For me the HD800 is much better than the hd650 in every way. Detail, soundstage, sound transient are just a league above for most kind of music. Especially for classical, orchestral music, the hd800 is far far better than any headphone i have ever heard like k701 hd650 D7000 and some stax sr404 setups.

I think the HD800s have no problem with its treble but its probably the fault of the recording. Here is a sample of orchestral music where my HD800 suffer from zero sibilance but unbelievably large sound stage, deep bass and freaking rich in detail. This is a beautiful track that i suggest every music lover to download and test your system.

I did the Complements on my HD800s, the first SE that he did, the picture on the site are my cables.  I will say that it took a bit to get used to the a slightly less transparent sound at first but the trade off was enormous.  The 800's became so much fuller sounding that it is hard for me to respond sometimes to the critic in that I feel I have a different sounding phone in many respects.  It is fuller with more bass and less trebly sounding.  Going back to stock sounds thin and hard to listen to for long periods.

Cool timing...I just bought one on the F/S forum this afternoon. Based on your description of the change in sound, it should hit the spot.
Thanks!

Did you get the full size copper?  I think both are good the lite version is less heavy and close in sq but i have the full sized.  Hope you like them, a much fuller and softer sound.
