The most downright depressive song you have ever heard
Mar 1, 2010 at 1:11 PM Post #46 of 98
I hated with a passion "Killing me softly" when it was a huge radio hit about 15 years ago. Other than that, after coming across a trailer for "Until the Light Takes Us", a movie about black metal, I'd say that music where the musicians slash their wrists on stage to the point they are sometimes hospitalised for loss of blood, or blow their brains out in their rooms, a picture of the resulting bloody mess which is then used as the next album cover, would have to rate for me as rock-bottom of miserable music.

Your argument regarding 'Until The Light Takes Us' is rock solid. 'Killing Me Softly' isn't actually that dark when you listen to the lyrics. If you have a guilty conscience 'Ready Or Not' by The Fugees can sound haunting and depressing. 'Take A Bow' by Muse directed at George W. Bush fits right in that ally.

Davidhunternyc,

When you are posting, at the top right side there should be a youtube icon, click it, you should get something like post the link in the middle, and it should work... Good luck,

WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS A SPOILER

This song became an icon right after it was used in the final episode of Six Feet Under. After 5 seasons of getting to know this family intimately, when this song played during this last greatest hour of television history, the water works came on and didn't turn off for 3 days. I was rattled to the very core. Now, like Pavlo's dogs, whenever I hear this song, I am brought back to this depressing but moving experience. There is a certain resignation and resolve about death that this song coupled with Six Feet Under makes profound.

Godspeed you! Black emperor's "The Dead Flag Blues".

Terrible.

The car's on fire,
and there's no driver at the wheel,
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides,
and a dark wind blows.
The government is corrupt,
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn.

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine,
and the machine is bleeding to death.

The sun has fallen down,
and the billboards are all leering,
and the flags are all dead
at the top of their poles.

It went like this:

The buildings tumbled in on themselves.
Mothers, clutching babies,
picked through the rubble
and pulled out their hair.

The skyline was beautiful on fire,
all twisted metal stretching upwards,
everything washed in a thin orange haze.

I said, "Kiss me; you're beautiful.
These are truly the last days."

You grabbed my hand,
and we fell into it
like a daydream
or a fever.

We woke up one morning
and fell a little further down.
For sure as the valley of death
I open up my wallet,
and it's full of blood.

Davidhunternyc - I absolutely loathe television. I have not had a TV hookup in my house for over 10 years now, and every time I watch at friends or neighbors I realize that I am not missing anything, and am astounded why anyone would want to sit and waste their time on the crap on most stations....except for a handful of really outstanding series that seem to be all produced by the better cable networks like HBO. Fortunately we get to watch all these after the fact on DVD without commercials. I have to say, Six Feet Under has to be my favorite of those series that actually occurs to me of some redeeming value, and that last episode you posted the link to the spoiler, was one of the best moments in television, I have ever witnessed...IMHO. Those who are interested should definitely NOT watch that spoiler David posted (out of context it just doesn't have the same impact, though the music is definitely beautiful) - just start watching the series from the beginning...my bet is you won't be able to stop. Among other great cable series I've enjoyed: Deadwood. Carnivale. Band of Brothers. Dexter (a guilty pleasure). Sorry for the Hijack, but I could not contain my enthusiasm when I was reminded of that last episode! Back to your regularly scheduled depressive programming. PS one person's "Sad" may be another's "Depressing".
