Why 1/5 of Americans Can't Locate the U.S. on a World Map

It seems to me that this is one of those statistics that can be easily manipulated or taken out of context. For example, a quick Google search tells me that approximately 7% of the US population is under 5 years of age.

I think the correct answer goes something like this:

"I personally believe that this is so because 1/5th of americans spend more time taking part in dumb competitions based purely on superficiality instead of actually taking part in any kind of meaningful education."

Im just going to assume that most of that 20% is children who are too young to read, or the mentally disabled. Although im pretty sure there is a large portion of mentally disabled people who are more intelligent than this particular breed of girl.

That is not all! Studies found 34% of statistics are just made up. Just look at these numbers:

I'd like to see the data too. Hey; it's a lot easier to justify exporting all the good jobs if folks can be convinced that our kids aren't intelligent enough to fill them.

....Beauty Queens excepted, of course.

I've seen this chart on another website, it's Photoshopped.

Sorry. The numbers do not lie.

You don't even have to manipulate the statistics or include children. Based on the standard I.Q. distribution, 16.5% of adult Americans have an I.Q. less than 84. Unless you work in customer service, you may not run into these people on a daily basis, but they're out there. Mix in a poor educational system and it's darn easy to see where the 20% could come from, especially given an unlabeled map.

(For reference, 100 is average, below 75 is basically untrainable.)

It would appear that's about the only thing she's got going for her.

after working a stint in a grocery i have to agree. those numbers aren't entirely out of line if the populous was equally represented in the staff and customer base of that store.

But yeah.....reference to "American". I've been in situations where I'm in groups with Canadians and Mexicans: even they have referred to US Citizens as "American"...as I think it's just easier to roll off the tongue (rather then "you United States of Americans")

We're a little "A" inside of a much bigger "A"

Having served in the US Navy for ten years, I had a chance to do a fair bit of traveling about, and I can tell you that the vast majority of people I met everywhere I went referred to people who live in the USA as "Americans".

I really think that people who make this a bone of contention are either pedantic, have an inferiority complex or are simply bored.

Present company excepted of course...
