Make sure your clamping force isn’t too high. If the pads are compressed too much from the clamping force it can make the stage feel tiny or odd sounding and muddy the mid range.

That’s a great call out. I have definitely had some unintentional knocks in the very beginning and now have a muscle memory of how high to lift the cup while changing out the pad. Will try this out.
