Asus Xonar U7 DAC/AMP Impressions Thread
I think most folks here missed the significance of your post. USBaudio 2.0 is a significant step by Microsoft. So what if they are 10 years late. Our lives all just got easier. No more fussing with driver settings assuming your DAC or other sound device that follows the 2.0 standard has been...- pageman99

Oppo Sonica DAC (an affordable ES9038PRO Sabre DAC)
Umm... "budget, entry level dac"? Sorry, I simply can't agree. I'd consider the Sonica dac as an upper mid level dac or at the lower end of the upper level dacs. So much of what we hear depends on other pieces of the audio chain, I'd be very careful of making this type of blanket statement...- pageman99

Oppo Sonica DAC (an affordable ES9038PRO Sabre DAC)
I received my SDAC about a week ago and have been listening quite a bit. It's not fully burned in yet imo, but it's close enough to post some impressions. It's smoother than the BDP105 in the top end but not by a large amount, it can still be a little strident at loud volumes. The mids and...- pageman99

Sennheiser HD800S loaner program @TTVJAudio.com
I originally posted this review in the comments section of Brooko's excellent and accurate review of the 800s. I am currently using a pair of 800s sent to me by Todd. It's likely even the same pair Brooko reviewed though I don't know that. Nice review Brooko I agree with much of what you say...- pageman99

sigh... I just lost the remainder of my comments which was beautifully written if I might say so myself. 8-) but to continue... But that stable should also contain headphones that do things no other headphone can. I just gave one example of how the HE560 does just that. The 800s [in my system]...- pageman99

I also am currently using a pair of 800s sent to me by Todd. It's likely even the same pair Brooko reviewed though I don't know that. Nice review Brooko I agree with much of what you say though I do want to add a bit of a different perspective as I mostly listened to the 800s balanced. My main...- pageman99

When is enough, enough?
I like your theory, I just can't make myself believe it. 8-) Too many electric lights, too many tv's, too many loud people and too much noise in modern life. But to address the original poster's point again, I like the fact that at some point most of us will balance budget vs sound and find...- pageman99

When is enough, enough?
Mevans, I have no problem with your statements. Some folks can't tell the difference between cables, amps and dacs. Hell, some claim there is no difference in sources because it's all just 0's and 1's. (I suggest those folks read this guide to...- pageman99

When is enough, enough?
Yes, interesting thread. To paraphrase Robin Williams' line about cocaine: "Headphones are God's way of telling you you're making too much money." 8-) I'll qualify that by adding, 'if you are lucky'. This IS a long term hobby and it teaches many things. For me, I have learned there...- pageman99

MAD Ear+ Purist HD thread.
Re: the Raytheon windmill getter. Very sweet, but not quite the resolution of the GE triple mica black plate, 5 star. If you look on Dr. Peppard's site, he has a review of various tubes. I tend to agree with everything he has to say. The man knows his sound.- pageman99

MAD Ear+ Purist HD thread.
I haven't posted in years. Shame on me. I just wanted Dr. Peppard to know his Ear+ has given me countless hours of joy. Not just pleasure, JOY. As far as tubes, I have several dozen laying around. Sylvania Gold Pins, Amperex, RCA Command, Siemens, you name it. But for my particular set up...- pageman99

More big banks failing...
Hmm... All very interesting. But IMHO, it'll all wash out, but at an ugly price. INFLATION. That's assuming the gov't is afraid of a depression and goes the bail out route. Of course inflation means cash is not a good thing to hold. And the older folks hard earned savings will be...- pageman99

Is Balanced Worth It?
And I'll add that the more I learn and the more I listen the more I've come to believe that source is the single most important component in the chain. Back on topic. I've said it before, but I'll restate that in my system I will say that balanced is a 20% improvement over single ended for...- pageman99

Balanced B22
If you're looking for the end of the road in sound quality, you should at least listen to balanced. For the Senn 650's, IME balanced is 20% better, at least if I could put a number on something not really measureable. BTW, IMO, there ain't no end of the road, just a certain emptiness in...- pageman99

Markl modded D5000(full mod) vs edition 9
Hmm... Sovkiller sometimes can't help himself when it comes to the E9's... My 2 cents. I've owned the D2000's, not the 5000's and certainly not Markl modified 5000's. (BTW, kudos to Markl, who's opinions I've found to be spot on, see my sig for his influence) The Denon's I found good...- pageman99

Is the Pico (as a DAC/Pre-amp) really all that?
Ok, just a follow up. After posting earlier and then reading some of the opinions of some of those whose experience I really respect, I decided to take the time to maximize the Pico's performance. I mean by taking the time to match tubes, cables, volume levels, and power cords. This ain't...- pageman99
