I currently own a Sansa Fuze and I do like its SQ but I wanted something with a little more storage space without resorting to using an SD card to expand the storage capacity of the player so I purchased a 16gb Zune HD and I'm not satisfied with SQ from the headphone out.

I have been seriously considering returning the Zune HD to purchase the Sony NWZX1051 after doing some research about Sony's MP3 players and I've read that it should sound much better than the Zune HD due to its S-Master digital amplifier and overall focus on SQ rather than features (although I can't see that it lacks any features).

I'm also not a big fan of the Zune Software, it works but its just a terrible interface.... I'd rather just have a way to drag and drop the files. Anyway I plan on using the headphone out to drive my IEMs (cheap Shure 110s) and maybe my Senn 280 Pros/Grado SR 60s (I'll be upgrading headphones at a later time).

I've basically narrowed my choices down to buying the Sony or settling with the Zune's SQ (and software) if the Sony won't sound any better.

Any recommendation will be helpful, thanks in advance!

The Zune HD seems to place more emphasis on the treble than what I'm used to and it doesn't seem to sound as full in the lower midrange and bass. I thought that it sounded quite flat (that was my initial impression) but after a while I felt it wasn't as flat sounding as I first thought it was.

I would prefer a slightly warmer sound that resolves more detail in the higher frequencies without sounding smeared or aggressive, a palpable midrange and accurate (not overbearing) lower register.

Out of interest, did the people who voted in this poll actually hear both daps?

I can't see who voted, that's why I'm asking. Was it a private poll?

I voted Sony. Didn't test any device.

I think the Zune is actually warm. I feel like what I don't like about the Zune's sound is that the treble doesn't sparkle and that detail wise it doesn't seem very transparent (maybe associated with lack of treble).

Regardless, the Sony is probably the better sound quality wise. I don't even think you need to open a thread to figure that out just by searching the many threads about it. The 16gb though is about the price of a 32gb Zune which makes it a little costly. If money is no problem, I think you totally got your answer.

Eitherway, I would return the Zune if your not happy with it. Worse thing to do is keep a $230 product that you do not appreciate.

The Zune HD sold out pretty much everywhere within a couple of days; there aren't enough people out there with both to make anything you read in the forums worth a whole lot.

I am not sure about ZUNE's HD sound quality, but I can assre you that X1050 falls short in terms of sound output against older Sony model S73x series. I am totally disappointed by Sony this time.

Huh? That is hard to believe. Would you tell something more about this experience of yours please!

If you only care about SQ and being able to drag and drop then I'd say go for the Sony. Last time I heard it against my A828, the X series has a much more three dimensional sound with bass that goes low (I would say the Zune HD sounds comparable more or less to the A828) . There were no sound enhancements enabled on the X and the sound was literally better than the A828 in every way, and it was very noticeable off the bat. I'm not sure whether the X series has even received any firmware updates, so if you're expecting it to be updating then forget about it.
