Zana Deux...Which Cans?
Nov 28, 2008 at 11:26 PM Post #2 of 36
Senn 650s

On my radar to try: AT-AD2000s and the Beyer DT48. Don't ask why, just seem interesting.

Have tried Grado PS-1, RS-1 (not really a fan of the Grado sound) GS-1000 (ditto). The K701s were kinda nice but a bit "polite"

AKG K701, Beyerdynamic DT990 and Sennheiser HD650. Sounds wonderful with all of them.

Either Senn HD600, HD650...I've never really liked the Senns until I heard them through the Zana.
Think the Zana works much better with high impedance cans vs lower.

The HD-650 is just glorious from the Zana; so is the HD-600. I'm not sure which I prefer.

I haven't heard the AD2000 from it (yet), but the DT48 is just amazing. Both the 25 and 200 ohm versions have absolutely black backgrounds and sound amazing. I think I like the 25 ohm version slightly better.

Have you tried a HP-1000 yet? They're not anything like the other Grados.

We had mini-meet with the RS-1/MS-2, HD600/650 recabled, Denon D2000, Ed. 9, K701/340 and I made an effort to listen to all of them on the ZD. I agree with the Senns statement above. To my tastes, I liked the 600s best. First time I'd heard them and was very impressed. The ZD power makes the 600s very clear and dynamic with the right amount of bass weight. Taint no veil there.

The HD600 sounds better than I have ever heard it elsewhere in comparison to with the ZD. It is the most synergistic match I have found in an amp and headphone. The K501's are a great compliment to the senns as well.

I have only heard a handful headphones on the Zana Deux, and one stood out as my clear favorite.
The Grado RS1

The HD650's sound amazing with the Zana Deux.
I also like DX1000 and RS-1, but the synergy with the senns are in a class of its own.

Ok . So what about the RS-1 vs. the GS-1000 ? KrMathis And Recstar ...... you have my attention.

So does everyone else , but besides the point . ) Super-good thread.

Can you compare/contrast vs. other hp as well ? Types of music ? Serious .... even my gf is beginning to understand that "1950's Radio Operator" headphones could provide more from the Zana. I know I am asking alot from my little headphones now. btw ... the bass has exploded. in relative terms. )

As soon as I discovered the Grado, I went to the dealer, which is the same she purchased the Nad from in '90, they only had the SA-60 (?). The entry level, running on the Grado amp. Very transparent.

I've had a minute to tune my ears to some different speakers lately, different thread. But the headphones are telling me I could use some serious amplification on this signal. Maybe even dirty it up. ))
