It's the 1st clumsy episodes that grate now.
But they were great at the time. Who knew the show would bloom.

I really should add Red Dwarf and Blackadder to my list. Red Dwarf is my favorite scifi program. No, maybe it's Picket Fences or Northern Exposure, both of which were like extended episolds of the Twilight Zone.

It was a "topical" sitcom set in a cable TV newsroom. The running joke was a poster showing "slimey git of the week" which was almost always Peter Bottomley ( then A tory minister).

A bit hit or miss and mostly ( but not entirely) left leaning. Like Murphy Brown only funny

My Missus really likes Murphy Brown

No one's mentioned Taxi yet?!

Mash
All in the Family
Taxi
Cheers
Frasier
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Northern Exposure
Fawlty Towers
To the Manor Born
Odd Couple
Night Court

[edit] Oh, yeah, Murphy Brown too!

Everything on my list is pretty dated, I stopped watching TV regularly nearly 10 years ago.

I used to like the Beverly Hillbillies when I was a nipper.

Steptoe is funny but "pathetic" (as in pathos) at the same time, never seen it on US TV.

I liked Murphy Brown, but it got so political that I lost my taste for it, but the first seasons were great. It was a great ensemble cast. And Taxi was also one of my favorite shows (I can't believe I forgot to mention it).

The best chick series were, are and will always be Sex and the City and Coupling.

Second "Red Drawf". How about "Mr. Bean"?

Do you remember the "Picket Fences" / "The X-Files" crossover episode involving cows giving birth to humans?

IMO, the greatest comedy show of all time was/is Andy Griffith. It remained number one during its eight year reign (IIRC) and not a week has passed since its ceasing production (1968) that you couldn't find re-runs.

While it was funny, it was a humor that didn't depend upon shock, cruelty, sexual innuendo or bad language. No, I'm not prudish, but it occurs to me how much more difficult it is to get a laugh if you can't resort to those aforementioned tendencies in modern TV.

1. Seinfeld (The only post-existential sitcom in existence)
2. Allo, Allo
3. Red Dwarf
4. It's Like Ya Know (The immediate successor to Seinfeld, God I wish they would release it on DVD)
5. Lateline ( Al Franken's short-lived sitcom, it was amazing)
6. Are You Being Served
7. Curb Your Enthusiasm
8. First Season of The Man Show (Kind of a live sitcom when you think about it)
9. Fraiser
10. Stark Raving Mad
11. The Job (I believe that was the title, Dennis Leary's short lived sitcom)
______________________________
Don't know if we are including animated sitcoms but:
12. The Critic
13. Simpsons
14. Family Guy
15. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law
________________________________

Back to regular sitcoms
16. Murphy Brown (Am I the only male that liked that show... creepy)
17. MASH
18. Night Court
19. Cheers
20. ALF

Man, reading some of these replies reminded me I need to put Frasier in my top 3, and also include Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
