Your story of budgets gone wrong.

What was your biggest waiver from your 'budget'? I'm sure we've all had one, here is a tale of my latest expenditure.

I was limiting myself to 200 pounds for a new hi-fi setup. Thinking of some modest Mission M71I's, and a Cambridge Audio AMP.

After shopping around for the day, I've ended up spending 300 pounds alone (576 USD) on an AMP, and then another 150 (picked up some 320 pound Mission V61's cheap as part of sale) on speakers. So, I ended up spending roughly 450 pounds, instead of the original guideline from 200 - and you know, I was originally thinking of getting some logitech speakers, damn this audiophile bug!

I think im up to $3,600 now... Not including all the music I have bought recently

The problem is just to buy what you have in mind, and forget about listening. Listening traps you into increasing your budget as sometimes what seems like a modest price increase yields increases in quality that once you hear you cant go back!!!!

It is nerve racking even if you dont listen also, as even me who cant listen before I buy, found myself continually upping my budget. Case in point, I was going for an Audiosource amp to compliment the Hafler pre I had, and then get a sub to go with my B&W 601 speakers. I have ended up buying an Adcom pre/ power package which cost me $700 used and buying speakers which also cost me $700 used, and ended up with a source that cost me $900. not to mention $210 for interconnects alone. and all ths blind.

THATS A BIG WAIVER IN BUDGET MAN!!!!!!!

I've pretty much given up on setting budgets for myself. I've broken them enough times.

But the biggest one ever was jumping from a small integrated to the Pathos Twin Towers. Wasn't planning a move, but the situation presented itself, and I bought a used TT for $3k. I sold my old integrated for all of $250.

But, oh, MAN, was it worth it!!

I just sold off my home setup so that I could buy a killer portable setup.

I am now doing just that... along with buying a recabled and tweaked AKG K340, some custom cables and pretty soon a Dynahi.

Probably the decision to pick up a dedicated cdp for my headphone rig. Just a simple single-disc, redbook cd player. So I picked up a TEAC CD-1, which was too bright, so I replaced it with a MMF-25, which was still too bright, so I ordered up a NAD 542, which was just right. Could have bought a Meridian for what I ended up shelling out. Oh, well.

Bill, I've gone through 4 or 5 different CDP's myself in the last 2 years, but fortunately I finally found the right system synergy with the Marantz CD6000 OSE. Trail and error can be an expensive undertaking, but it's worth it if you find the right combo.

When I last went looking for a source upgrade, I originally was looking at cdps no more than $2000. Problem was, everything the local audio shops had wasn't a big enough upgrade, to my ears, to justify the cost. Then I heard the MF NuVista, and just like that blew my original budget by more than double! Ouch, but it was worth it.

I got the V61's from Paul Roberts hifi (a solo shop in bristol), they had a pair out on display. As they were a display pair and sales were on, got them for 150 instead of 320, great deal to be honest! Although I'm a little wondering as the bass is quite possesive on them.
