I planned $400 tops for speakers. Ended up spending only $80 (though the original non-used price of the speakers was above my budget)

You managed to pick up 400 ones for 80? If so that's awesome

I had a 300 dollar budget for headphones.

I ended up buying Sony CD3000s (400) and a custom JMT PPA to go with them (550)

I'm glad I spent the money on the amp. I love it. Sorta glad, about the headphones. I loved them, but they busted yesterday, after only six months (the right driver went out). Now I am preparing to buy a new pair, and get them woodied too.

I was originally going to spend <$500 on headphone and amp (DT770 pro and META42 was what I was looking at when I first arrived at head-fi).

Now I'm up to up to $410 (HD650's, when I bought them) + $975 (Benchmark DAC1, when the new year comes/payday) + $100 Headphile XLR HD650 cable + $45 Glass Toslink + $25 AV-710. Total: $1555, only $1k more than I came to spend which by the looks of it doesn't seem too bad in comparison to most .

After shopping around for the day, I've ended up spending 300 pounds alone (576 USD) on an AMP, and then another 150 (picked up some 320 pound Mission V61's cheap as part of sale) on speakers. So, I ended up spending roughly 450 pounds, instead of the original guideline from 200 - and you know, I was originally thinking of getting some logitech speakers, damn this audiophile bug!

I joined headfi in september 2004. I only had a sony av reviever (about 6 years old) and a pair of hd600 (stock cable). This is what happened to me....

Headphones:

Senn 650, grado 225's, 2Xgrado 325's, grado hp-1's, hp-2's, 2Xgrado PS-1's, 2Xsony r-10's,allesandro Ms-2's,grado rs-1's

Amps:

Xcans v2.0, sugden headmaster, gsp solo+psu1, grado ra-1,earmax standard, earmax pro, earmax pro anniversary, rudistor rp5ref, WNA (DIY amp), Melos Sha Gold (aka maestrobator) carlo modded, grace 901, Grado Hpa-1 amp

Sources:

Musical Fidelity Tri-vista Sacd player

DCS delius/purcell (Upsampler/dac)

Mark Levinson 31 reference transport/ML 30.5 reference dac

Tweaks:

Cardas replacement cable (for the HD600)

Nordost Valhalla 1.5m XLR interconnect,

2XNordost SPm reference interconnects

and I think that's about it.

My budget was about £500 for new source on headphone amp....

Btw Shuurajou. I don't live far from you. Only over the severn bridge into Wales...

Can't touch that but I came here looking for an amp(budger=~$100) to use in my portable rig which consisted of the venerable nomad jukebox. Was totally ignorant and blissfully happy with my rig....then came Head-Fi.

Amps: Total Airhead, Emmeline XP-7, and HR-2
IC's: Rat Shack, Monster, and Grover SR IC's
Source: Sony SCD-C555ES with mods by SACDmods, iPod 4G/40GB, iPod 4G/20 GB, Rio Karma, Rio Carbon
Cans: Grado SR-60's, SR-80's, SR-225's, Sony CD3K's, Senn HD600 with Cardas, Senn HD650 with Zu Mobius, Ety ER-4P, Ety ER-6i's.

Already looking for another amp and always on the lookout for new cans so I guess I'm not really an audiophile but a gear freak. Hope that's not true but I'm seemingly never satisfied. Wish I could be but it's hard. I just know audio bliss is just around the corner. Sometimes I feel like a dog who's always chasing but never catching his tail.

My rule of thumb, set a budget, then plan to shell out twice that amount. Works like a charm.

In case you're wondering, no, I'm not married. LOL
