Sorry, gotta chose the whole 70's decade. A lot of good things were seen then, including Edger Winters Frankenstein.

Definitely mid to late 70's.

Aerosmith, "Toys in the Attic", "Rocks"
The Who, "By Numbers", "Who Are You"
Rush, "2112", "Hemispheres"
Pink Floyd, "Animals"
Led Zepplin, "Physical Grafitti", "Presence"
Supertramp, Ted Nugent, Journey, Boston, Styx, ELO, Steely Dan, Queen, Genesis, etc.....

All these bands were in their hey day for the most part and it still probably represents the strongest era of classic rock.

Moving into the 80's I basically only think of REM and U2 owning that decade and a declining Genesis and the emergence of very forgetable big hair bands. Obviously some exceptions though.

I went to Creamfields that summer! The Return of Runrig with Everything You See, I went to Brecon Jazz Festival that summer!, Matrix & Futurebound - Universal Truth, Salmonella Dub - Heal Me, Justice - Cross, Makoto - Believe in my Soul, LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver, The rise of deadmau5, Chromeo - Fancy Footwork

I will have to go with the 70's also. The 60's are a close second. I like the simplicity of the music from long ago. Stuff like "My Boyfriend's Back" and the Beach Boy's and Del Shannon etc were really fantastic but it is so hard to get good copies of that music that sounds as clear as I remember in my mind being. Hope all that made sense. I especially loved the simple harmonies they produced.

A bunch of years from the 90's would be my choice half for nostalgia reasons. I imagine many recall the music we loved in our youth, a little more fondly.

Specifically 95 struck me as particularly good:

Tri Repetae++, Washing Machine, I Care Because You Do..., Clouds Taste Metallic, Leftism, Garbage, Imaginations from the Other Side, Elastica, Northern Soul, To Bring You My Love, Different Class, Post, Demanufacture, From Here You'll Watch the World Go By, Nihil

2008

not saying it was 'the best year' by any means. but it is my 'favorite' because of the personal impact the music had!

here is why
1. it was the first year i really 'got into music'
2. it was the prime time of highschool which i miss, so all the music from that year (which was a lot considering that was when i get into music) is pure nostalgia now (only a couple years later). 2008 was such a great year, and the music captures all the memories. for me thats the most important factor in music; how it effects your life/memories.

Not at all, I wasn't around in the 70's so I don't know the music as well. There is always more than enough new music to keep me entertained. Also I wasn't around for any festivals/gigs in the 70's.

I have to go with 1972. Albums like Exile On Main Street, Harvest, and many others made it an incredible year in music.

Couple that with the Rolling Stones legendary 72 American Tour, perhaps the greatest rock tour in history, and it was a very good year!
