Yggdrasil: A (P)review - Two days of paradise

My decision point: Yggdrasil or the HE-1000 beta.

– a DAC is upstream from everything; both speakers and cans benefit
– Yggy is the work of a bonna-fide master in the field
– Yggy has been listened to, carefully, by many here and praised
– AFAIK, HE-1000s have been heard by only a few at (relatively noisy) meets/shows

I wish to do both, but must choose one to be first. This seems obvious... additional thoughts and advice, please?

I was selected for the HE1000 beta test program as well. I think it would be a better idea to get the headphone side taken care of first. That's what I'm gonna do. Here and here are some good impressions from private listening instead of at meets.

I will order a Yggdrasil as soon as it comes out. I will be a HE1000 beta tester and I want to hear the Yggy and Rang make that can sing like a muse of fire. :)

Do you use speakers as much or more than headphones? Do you already own nice headphones that you enjoy? For me in the same situation as you I would go DAC due to my speaker listening. Plus, the DAC will shift the sound reproduction of your system meaning you might suddenly find your existing headphones sound better to you. Not to mention, there will a new HiFi Man to replace the HE-6 sooner than later I'll bet that will benefit from the HE 1000 technology. I say go DAC.

My major regret... not taking the HE-1000 from Hifiman's table over to Schiits table. I didn't like the HE-1000 with Hifimans integrated setup. I couldn't get an accurate idea of the sound also with their poor music choices.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, I do enjoy my current cans – HE-560s driven by a Ragnarok. I'm just reeealy curious what the HE-1000s will sound like. I use headphones and speakers, both close to equally. Planar magnetic either way, as the speakers are my trusty pair of MG12s.

Totally get the DAC (assuming it would be a significant upgrade over your current DAC which I don't know if it is). I am also tempted by the HE 1000, but my 560s are good enough that I think the total system benefit of a new DAC would provide much more benefit. Get the DAC!!

Get the DAC.  Wait for the reliability of the HE-1000 is established.

I am disappointed from this post, wink. So serious...

agree. HE-560 is the better choice right now. HE-1000 sounded good but I didn't get to move it around to different setups at CanJam 2015 and I still preferred the LCD-3F and Ether on their respective setups. Is the HE-1000 $3000 good? Time will tell

Sounds like Schiit. They would wait one day after 4/20 just to tease us, and so their website wouldn't shut down from mike pressing the refresh button

"When doctors are trying to diagnose whether you have gas or cancer from MRI results, or when the military is trying to ensure a missile hits an ammo dump and not a nunnery next door, or they don’t use “24 bit” or “32 bit” delta-sigma D/A converters. Instead, they rely on precision, 20-bit ladder DACs, like the Analog Devices AD5791"

It is so beautiful
