I acquired tinnitus from some seriously unknown reason about two months ago, and so I went to the doctor who said everything was fine, and my hearing was excellent and attributed my tinnitus to allergies, for which I took medication and did not abate the problem.

Just today my left ear started crackling when I move my jaw or my earlobes. I think it's just earwax, but I am not sure...

See another doctor. You most likely have something in your ear, earwax probably.

Guess I know what you have - I also suffer from that sometimes. It's just...***pooh, hard to be described in english***...it's just fluid in your inner ear that can't proceed its usual way down the throat due to coryza-caused (or allergy caused) blockages. Nothing very serious.

Cure: Get rid of that coryza, meanwhile try to dissolve that blockage from time to time (e.g. before going to sleep) by means of spray. Not too often, you can get addicted from that stuff.

what you seem to be describing doesn't sound at all like tinnitis or even ear-related at all. "Crackling when moving jaw", certainly has nothing to do with either. A masssive buildup of wax will result in an inability or diminution of hearing - not "crackling". It sounds more like TMJ - a condition where the jaw becomes chronically mis-aligned. An ear doctor is NOT what you need...........this is only my opinion as a layman, and NOT a physician.

I had a similar problem, which may or may not be related to your problem, so take this with a grain of salt:

I experienced the same crackling sound in my ear and occasional bursts of tinnitus. I went to see a otorhinolaryngologist (and not an audiologist!) who said I had problems with small Eustachian tubes (the tubes which leads from the ears to the nose and enable the ears to decompress) which were blocked by mucus. This mucus then prevents the normal depressurization of the ears (middle ear too) which leads to those crackling/popping sounds. This can be treated by dissolving and getting rid of the mucus, usually by nose drops/sprays. Also, you can try yawning and chewing gum to "open" the tubes more than they are usually open to help decompress your ears.

But, as I said, I suggest you visit a ORL doctor ASAP.

I had similar and doctor also blamed blockage and prescribed descongestionant. Didn't work. <sigh> I have history of allergies.

As you know we do have more or less the same tinnitus problem.

It started 6 weeks ago. The first two weeks a rushing sound. I really got stressed because thinking i seriously damaged my ears due to extensive HP listening.

Third week the sound became louder and also got some pressure problems inside my ear (and panic attacks at night). I visited the Doctor. She could not find any signs of inner ear infection (humid behind the eardrum).

I did a listening check a week later and all was fine (besides the tinnitus). However the Doctor found that the right eardrum less flexible indicating some problems in Eustachian tubes. So there seems to be light at the other end of the tunnel. Got a spray (flexonaze).

However the tinnitus got worse and visited the Doctor again and this time she noticed humid behind the eardrums. Also I discovered that when moving my lower jaw forward the tinnitus really gets strong (high chain saw sound)She told me that this should not happen in the case the tinnitus was caused by hearing damage due to sound/HP's. Position of your head should not influence the sound level of the tinnitus. I hope she is right.

Since a couple of days it feels like having something/pressure inside my left ear and it hurts a bit. The tinnitus seems to come from the left ear as well.

I will see the specialist by the 7th of January an other 2 weeks to go. I pray that the tinnitus is caused by irritated tubes getting worse over time and not because of listening to long to HP's and having a permanent tinnitus problem AND an irritated Eustachian tube

I sure will be more careful with this HP hobby in the future.

One question.
Is it OK to listen to HP's when having tinnitus (taking the necessary precautions re length of listening and decibel level). I packed all my HP's and amps and put them away for the time being.

If anyone is interested in the conclusion of this particular story, it was that a strand of hair got into my ear and made the noises when agitated.

This guy is right... I had the SAME EXACT thing a week ago. I went to the audiologist and told him my symptoms and then he looked at me. He said it my ears are fine and that it is TMJ.

What doctor would you go to to see if you have TMJ?
