I am too! A year ago, in an interview with Keyboard, he said he also has a PHM 5.1 ready to go, but the label was holding it up.

Year Zero is getting better every time I listen to it. There are some classic NIN tracks here - "Hyperpower", "The Beginning of the End", "Vessel", "Me I'm Not", "The Great Destroyer", "Meet Your Master", "Zero Sum"

For me, it sounds like a cross between PHM and TDS; taking the melody of the former and noise of the latter, thrown in with some glitch off Fixed, and one can't forget the huge drums. I thought WT was supposed to have big drums. It has nothing on YZ.

I am falling in love with this album. Trent is back!

Right now, I have TDS>B>PHM>YZ>TF>WT

Haven't heard PHM in a half year or so. If I do soon, YZ might take it over.

If I remember correctly, the label that bought PHM said he could go ahead with the remaster, but they weren't going to pay him for it, or something along those lines. Not cool if that's true.

Not up to The Fragile (my favorite album of all time), but a good showing

Also IIRC, but the label that owned PHM got bought out, and the plans for the 5.1 kind of got scrapped, because like you said, the new label refused to pay Trent for his work. And he ain't working for free.

I'm not a huge fan of The Fragile, but I'd totally buy it if he did an SACD.

Pretty much all of Trent's work would do well in 5.1. Anybody heard of plans for a 5.1 Broken. Happiness in Slavery would sound pretty sweet on a good surround system.

Again, I'll reference that Keyboard magazine interview where Trent also said he would like to re-issue every album in 5.1 re-mastered editions (boy WT could use the re-master). But for post PHM, it's up to Universal. And I'm worry because I see TDS Deluxe Ed's everywhere still and wonder how sales have been. It seems Universal has been backing off releasing Deluxe Editions and stopped dual disc releases completely.

NIN has a devoted fan base though, so who knows?

It's kind of reminding me of Thom Yorke's Eraser. It's got all the little beeps and clicks and it just great headphone music. I was kind losing a little interest in both Radiohead and NIN and both of these albums are doing something new and taking their sound further.

The other thing is NIN lyrics seem a little more mature than having 40 year + Trent still singing about the same stuff he did 20 years ago. I also a big fan of concept albums. Instead of getting little 3 minute songs, you get sort of story when you listen to the whole album.

88Chris, I noticed the MJ hook last night. I picked up a friend in the car, and started playing it, and he was jumping into singing the MJ tune when he stopped... "What the hell?"

Good times.

iamoneagain, the best album I've found that tells a good tale was "A grand don't come for free" by the Streets... But that's for another thread.

Dito. I'm not that impressed with the album. It's not bad - far from it, it just doesn't give me goosebumps like previous releases do.
I don't think it's too experimental though, my major hang-up is that it's lacking the contrasts, dynamics & awesome production work of previous albums.
I also think that the material itself isn't as strong as previous efforts.

With TDS you definetely did not know what was around the corner,
Trent could flip between completely diffrent vibes within a song, and it would still feel
cohesive. TDS is such a voyage and one of thee most brilliant albums ever made.
It's just oozing with ambition and vision. And not to mention sharp contrasts
and extreme dynamics.
I rank it up there with Pink Floyd's DSOTM and The Wall.
YZ is just a lot of the same thing, noisy all the way through.
But like I said, it's not a bad album.. just feels a bit like "NIN light".

And yes, this is coming from an absolute die hard fan too.

I like the album, but to be honest, I think I like With Teeth better. That said, I'm really happy we've got another album out of Trent. There was such a long time between The Fragile and With Teeth, that I figured we'd have to wait forever.

My favourite Nine Inch Nails material is his remixed stuff anyway - but I would rate Year Zero a solid 8 out of 10.

My initial reaction when I first heard it was wow! (Which is not always a good thing)

With repeat listens I still really like it, every time I hear it still makes me smile. It's noisy, loud and reminds me of old NIN.

But I still prefer The Fragile, The Downward Spiral, Still, Broken, and Pretty Hate Machine in that order.

What is "Still"?

Year Zero is growing on me...but it still lacks the depth of his earlier works. The songs are simply too short and they just dont develop like the material on TDS or The Fragile.
Its noisy, yes-and contains some of the more raw, industrial sounds that are reminiscent of the early days. However, the tracks here, like those on With Teeth still have that short, pop-ish composition that to me, makes the album sound rushed and un-finished.

Still was something like a collection of B-sides along with a few alternate versions of some of his songs. If was released with the deluxe edition of "And all that could have been" (never have seen this one), and by itself as a limited edition release sometime afterward (the one I have). The songs "Adrift and At Peace" and "Leaving Hope" are two of the saddest songs I have ever heard. It also has acoustic sounding versions of "Something I Can Never Have", "The Fragile", and "The Becoming" which are all great.

There is an eBay auction selling these right now for around $20 a pop, which is about what I paid for mine a few years ago.

Year Zero still sounds good to me. By this time with "With Teeth" I was starting to skip songs (namely the singles), something which I never did with any of his other albums.

My personal ranking: TDS > Still > TF > TFA > Broken > YZ > PHM > FDtS > WT
