Tried all the opamps quickly today on my XD-05

OPA1602
Tube sounding opamp. Not quite replaceable with tubes but pretty close. The typical reverb (or harmonics) is present, treble is really sweet. This one is the most pleasurable to listen. But not accurate and precise, certainly not that detailed. Bass depth is average, or maybe below average. Treble extension is unnoticeable if it is present even. Mids are forward, really nice and smooth.

OPA1652
Smooth, details not satisfactory. Neutral, very thick sounding. Bass depth is noticeably nice, treble extension is better than the OPA1602. It's actually a toss between this and opa1602, for different moods. They are both quite different.

OPA1642
This is the one that gets closest to LME49720. It's very confusing to compare these two. One thing is clear though, lme49720 is more precise and accurate in terms of imaging and placement. Also, lme49720 seems to have better and more extended highs. But I need more time to get conclusive on this opamp. It looks promising. It has the same level of clarity as lme49720. For now, I have replaced lme49720 with opa1642 to get more detailed impressions.

As of now, LME49720 & OPA1642 are the 2 best in my XD-05.

Two questions:

1) How does one remove the volume knob?

2) Anyone tried the Sparkle Labs SS3602 op amp in the xd-05?

Thanks

Also, would this DAC improve my sound if I connect the computer to it, use it as DAC and then send the analogue signal to my ordinary loudspeaker amplifier? Theoretically it should, right?[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the feedback! By the way that was my first post here, I really like this forum.

Hi. I am new this the forum also and just read your post. Most definitely it will improve the sound. That is one of the reasons I bought the xDuoo XD-05. It's too big to be truly portable but it sure is portable enough to move from desktop to hifi elsewhere in the house when not using it as a desktop headphone rig. I am currently using a Shanling M1 as the player feeding into the XD05 via an OTG cable. Then I send the analog out into my home hifi and it sounds great. I have two hifi's in my house, one in a large room with Audio Research gear and Martin Logan Ascent loudspeakers. The other is in a smaller room with Meridian pre-amp, Monarchy Audio monoblocks and Totem Model One Signature loudspeakers. I am perfectly happy using the xDuoo at times in those systems.

I too am a happy owner of xDuoo XD-05, and would like to thank everyone for their great observations. It helped me with my decision to purchase the XD-05. I am using it primarily to power Monolith M1060 planars. Very nice combo. Significant improvement over plugging the M1060s into a portable DAP. I have a Cowan Plenue D that is my go to DAP. The XD-05 seems to control those M1060 drivers better, delivering a noticeable improvement in sound stage. The Plenue D only has analog out so I bought a little Shanling M1 to use as a player feeding into the XD-05 via OTG cable, creating a semi-portable rig I can move around with rather than being tied to desktop.

Finally, I'm able to use Coaxial Port of XD-05 with Fiio X5-2 using some very cheap adopter named as '3.5mm Stereo Male Plug to Mono RCA Female Audio Adaptor/connector/converter' below is the picture paired with Fiio L21 - Only one gripe though that adopter is Silver plated - I never know if it degrades the sound quality due to silver coating.

So I've been evaluating the Burson V5i-D in my xDuoo XD-05.

What exactly are the strengths of V5i-D vs LME49720?

For the first, soundstage is amazing. It's wide, well separated and precise. Though depth is not as resolved as on 49720.

Has a significant bass thump and mids are forward and probably slightly, very slightly upped. Highs are controlled. Extension is present but in a controlled manner so as to not bother the sensitive people but still be noticeable to the critical listeners.

This creates an effect like listening to the instruments in a cosy studio from a distance whereas the LME49720 feels like listening to instruments in a concert/opera hall from the stage (pretty close). Now you can visualise exactly the difference in soundstage.

Key features of sound is its thick. 49720 is very lean sounding. Lean and quick. The V5i-D is thick smooth and still pretty damn detailed sounding. Detail perception is better on V5i-D vs 49720 owing to its soundstage and better mid bass/lower mid presence.

Previously I thought V5i-D doesn't reproduce instruments as naturally and accurately. Now when I visualise the soundstage in a way described above, I think it's natural but in a different way. Same instrument sounds different when played in a opera hall vs when played in a studio. This opamp is like a good spacious studio. Very dark background. Whereas 49720 is like an opera hall with you close to the stage or on the stage. Background is filled with instruments, micro details like artist breathing, hands moving over strings, etc.

TL;DR
V5i-D is very very good. LME49720 has destroyed my listening preference, but spending some time with V5i-D I learnt how sound can be reproduced in a different way without sacrificing natural tonality.

V5i-D does have a bit of noticeable sibilance. Not harsh, not overbearing but sibilant nonetheless.

For me though, I still prefer LME49720 anyday. It has better extension on either ends. It sounds more acoustic than V5i-D. Like it's lean, nimble, swift. Also, soundstage depth and then resolution of depth is better with the LME49720.
