I hope you ll rockbox the X3 too, cause with the stock firmware is really minimalistic

The biggest thing for me was lack of buttons (touch screen). I use my dap when falling asleep. The 770 has a sleep timer and auto-resume which is great, and often in the middle of the night I want to resume it and get the trance going again to lull me back to sleep. But with the 770 there is no way I can get play resumed without staring at the screen and waking myself up. I presume that with the X3 and all of it's buttons, getting play resumed again could be done by braille.

Other things about the x770 that weren't great: compressed flac files didn't play well (although that might be fixed now?), no gapless playback, no playlist support etc. But it has since been rockboxed, and those aren't issues with the rockboxed x770.

That thing sounded great though! I understand that the X3 is pretty close in SQ.

I hope you ll rockbox the X3 too, cause with the stock firmware is really minimalistic

Yes, I'm pretty sure I will. I'm not thrilled that rockbox downsamples hi res files, but to be honest I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

There is no part number for the X3 battery.  Just some dimensions and specs:

The battery is 613773 [3.7v 2000mAh 7.4Wh? lithium-polymer LiPO(PLIB)] with a two pin connector.

(The earlier 1500mAh battery was rated at 7.4Wh.... not sure what the Wh rating is for the later 2000mAh battery.)

6.1mm height
37mm width
73mm length

I am assuming you want the 3.7v 2000mAh 7.4Wh? lithium-polymer LiPO(PLIB)] with a two pin connector.

I will see what I can come up with

Bob,

I found two sources one overseas and one in USA both with 2 pin molex connector

Nothing comes up under the 613773 but these match the specs for the 2000 mah battery.  I can't find a match for the 1500mah battery based on info you provided

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/DTP-lithium-polymer-battery-3-7v_60455100613.html?spm=a2700.7724857.0.0.674l4Q.  This is by far the cheapest and it has the two pin molex connector you need.  You can contact the company to verify price and shipping and to make sure it ships with the 2 pin molex connector.  I am guessing it will be a month or so for delivery.

http://www.batteryspace.com/polymerli-ionbatterymoduleullisted37v2000mah74wh-prewiredwithpcb.aspx this company is in Richmond California but they want $23.95 for one battery vs $3.00 US from alibaba.  Battery Space offers different connector choices including the 2 pin molex connector you need.

I hope this helps

The batteryspace one is simply too wide to fit the X3 case (51mm vs stock 37mm).
The alibaba one is a 634169 which is just a tad bigger in both height and width.  Might fit but would have to be bought and tried to confirm.

I talked to a buddy who repairs audio equipment and he could not find the 613773 in any of his product catalogs.  He suggested to me that these batteries may only be made available to original equipment manufacturers in this size specifically so customers can't replace the batteries themselves.  This is such a niche market compared to say cell phones and tablets and if customers could source and replace the batteries themselves alot of these smaller Chinese DAP makers would go out of business due to a lack of new sales.

Sony is catching alot of flack now because their spare parts supplier is no longer selling replacement batteries for any of the Sony DAP's to Sony customers.   Sales of Sony DAP's have dropped significantly because people aren't upgrading their DAP's every year like they do with cell phones and to a lesser degree tablets.  The Sony A20 series is still not available for sale in Canada and has just become available in limited supply to US online retailers.  Most of the compelling features on Sony DAP's like LDAC bluetooth came out on the A10 series and very little has changed on the A20 series except for the noise cancelling feature which only works with Sony earphones and the prices have gone up, way up on the Sony Canada site and still not available for sale.

On audio only products there are only so many new features you can add or change on the lower end of the price scale.  That is why there is a trend to more expensive DAP's with features like bluetooth, wifi and Air play among others.  The cheaper DAP's have run out of new features that can be added cheaply.

I would not be surprised if Xduoo changed the battery on the X3 not to make it better but to make it impossible for customers to source and replace their own batteries.  It will be interesting to see if the batteries from alibaba will fit the X3

Your description of Sony and other DAP makers' attempts to corner the market on replacement batteries reminds me of a gambit Panasonic played with their digital cameras.  They had some scheme where the camera had to shake hands with some circuitry embedded in their batteries.  L O T S of folks were outraged.  I know I walked away with their admittedly great LX3 the last Pansonic Lumix I ever bought.  I still use it and it performs well for an 8 year old compact 10 megapixel camera.  No clue if Panasonic mended its ways.

Give the stock FW a day or two before switching if you have no prior rockbox experience. There are a couple bugs (none which affect me) and I am a big fan of the minimal interface. Definitely undeerstandable a lot of poeple will want more than what the stock FW gives you to offer.

It makes me think of what Apple has always done with their products offering not only non-replaceable batteries but also no expandable memory.  Both to force customers to constantly have to upgrade their products.  People are finally getting tired of being held captive by the evil Apple empire.

If the whole non-replaceable battery movement is taking place industry wide then extended warranties could become obsolete as well.  When I bought my A17 Sony gave a free extra year on the warranty to help jump start sales.  You could buy a 3 year extended warranty including drop protection for $85.00.   These extended warranties are unheard of now unless the retailer offers them as an add on.

This may sound crazy but when I was studying electronics engineering I had a few friends who converted their portable electronics to use replaceable rechargeable batteries.  They would replace the battery wiring inside the unit, drill a small hole in the casing and then run wiring through the hole to a cradle for the replaceable batteries mounted to the case.  They would then jury rig a cover over the external batteries that could be removed.  It certainly made the player bulkier but it made charging and replacing batteries much easier

Something you could consider doing if you can't find a replacement battery that will fit inside.  Depending on how the case comes apart to access the battery if you could run the wire for the battery from inside the case to the outside of the case. ' You could then put the battery into some kind of waterproof sleeve and then either tape it or maybe velcro the battery pouch to the back of the case.  If you could find a 2 pin molex to 2 pin molex extension wire or even make one then you could replace a battery mounted on the outside of the case without having to reopen the case.

Obviously I would only do this if the original battery dies and the player is out of or has no warranty.  At that point you would have nothing to lose.

Just use any matching Lipoly single cell and solder the molex connector to it. Job done.

There are tons of batteries for the RC hobby (copters mainly), you need a 1S 1500mAh - 2200mAh cell which costs around 3-4 USD. Even if you do not find any matching cell just solder together some smaller ones in a 1S 2P or 3P configuration will do the trick nicely.

First off you can buy these batteries with the two pin molex connector already connected (no soldering needed).  Second not all compatible batteries are the right dimensions to fit inside the case.  So no not that simple!

I'm curious where you look for batteries?

Easiest thing to do is just enter the specs for the batteries you want in google.  Just make sure you find ones with the same dimensions you need or they may not fit.   Given that most Chinese DAP's use Chinese made batteries sites like alibaba.com and possibly aliexpress.  Just be prepared to wait awhile for delivery

I am talking about the fact that A) the X3 has definite issues that have not and will not be addressed. That it needs a third party solution, namely Rockbox to make it fully functional. To me that makes it a lemon.  B) The fact that new DAP's will be coming out between now and the end of the year including if I understand correctly the X3+plus which I will consider if it overcomes the X3 issues that keep me from wanting to purchase the X3.   I can't audition Xduoo products so I need to rely on what other users have to say which is why I have read most of the posts in this forum.  The issues that people have mentioned are ones that will keep me from wanting to buy the X3.

Just because you can buy a product that has unresolved issues and is poorly supported by the manufacturer doesn't mean you should!

I have owned and currently own several Fiio products and considered buying the M3 because I wanted something small and light to use for workouts.  Unfortunately just like the X3 it has issues that can't or won't be fixed by Fiio so I chose not to buy it.  Fiio is working on their X series DAP's right now and I am waiting to see if they release any new versions before the end of the year.  I will consider any new Fiio DAP's along with the X3+plus and anything other DAP's that may come out as well that fit my needs and are in my price range.

I will be checking on this forum form time to time looking for any information on the X3+plus.  I have said all I need to say about the X3.

The new Xduoo DAP will be named as X5, not X3+plus, not X4. Like most Chinese companies, they avoid the number 4.

So the new DAP, with AK4490 chip, is not a replacement of X3. The X3 will be continued and supported. The new Xduoo X5 will have better DAC, larger battery,  but also heavier and more expensive. Personally I will buy both. X3 is very light and portable. And I think they probably have different sound tuning.
