  Xvortex,

Both my 128Gb SD cards are ExFat so it looks like I need to reformat one to Fat32 and then load all my music files again which will take quite some time as the cards are near full.

.......................................

ADDENDUM:

With a couple of folks now reporting installation problems I may just sit back and wait for this release to fully mature.

If you do decide to go ahead with the rockbox installation, if I were you, I'd try to find an old microSD card for the job. Any old 2 gig or 4 gig etc card will do it fine. Once the installation is complete, you can copy the rockbox folder over to your 128gig card(s). I can't see any reason why that won't work. It will save you a LOT of hassle with re building your big libraries on the big cards.

My installation went fine, but, I'm an old luddite deliberately hanging well back behind the crest of the tech' wave. I'm using XP SP2 !   Even XP isn't happy with the USB driver/interface but I don't use a direct connection with the X3 for file transfer, I use a card reader.

Actually, I did have one scary moment while doing the installation. I followed the directions to the letter. When I installed the USB driver, nothing else happened with the installation script. So, I unplugged the X3 and reset it. Then reconnected it and rebooted the instal script. The script got working and did the whole thing in less than 2 minutes. At first I was expecting more to happen, because there is a list of 'actions' on the screen while the script runs. Eventually, I assumed it had run all it was going to, and unplugged the X3. I reset it again, then pressed the power button. It booted up perfectly, into Rockbox.

Appreciate the advice about using a small FAT32 card and then moving the rockbox folder to my 128Gb ExFAT card.  A lot less painful for sure.

About your scary moment.... I wonder if installing the USB driver BEFORE attempting the installation process should be the default method.  I note in Xvortex's instructions he says  "9) Install the driver for JZ4760 USB Boot if you didn’t install it previously."

I'm running Win 7 SP1 64 bit FWIW.  I'm assuming that driver is good to go for both 32 and 64 bit Windows flavors.

So you just accessed the microSD directly instead of plugging the X3 into the computer? If it works that way that'll save people tons of trouble...

My X3 is at home waiting for me.... i think. should be there tomorrow if not today.

No......

I had to connect the X3 to the computer for the rockbox install script to do it's thing.

It's from now on, that I can use a card reader. ( and copy the rockbox folder to any other cards I use int he X3 )

My Windows XP reports that a USB device has 'malfunctioned' when I connect the X3. I'm not sure when it first started to tell me that. It obviously wast a problem while the script was running, or it would have failed.

Ah okay, I see what you're saying now. I was wondering how that would be possible!

I imagine the fact you run xp made it go smoother too.

USB support on this particular port might need to be worked on a bit before it works reliably as a mass storage device.

Xvortex,

You've mentioned the port is 95% with a few bugs.  I didn't see any release notes that would document any implementation quirks or bugs remaining to be resolved.  Do you plan on adding such comments to your http://xvtx.ru/rockbox/index.htm page?

Sorry.  Found a "known issues.txt" file in the rockbox_full.zip folder:

This is a list of known "issues" in the current Rockbox.
These are flaws/bugs we know of that are not likely to be fixed within a reasonable time so we list them here and close the bug tracker entries for them.
FS#894 - When the complete playlist fits in the mpeg buffer, and the playlist
is played multiple times, the tracks are reloaded from disk multiple times
  instead of loaded only once.

FS#2147 - It's a bug in the MAS. It starts bitshifting data on occasion. High
load on the MAS makes this behaviour more likely (high recording level, high
quality setting, high sample rate). It's impossible to avoid, but there are
plans to implement a recording 'framewalker' that checks recorded data and
restarts recording when the MAS starts delivering bitshifted data.

FS#4937 - A constant rhythmic ticking noise occurs in the right
channel. Believed to be related to our slow I2C implementation, and occurs
when the battery status and/or realtime clock are updated (the battery is
read at up-to 2.5hz and the clock at up-to 1hz). Nothing is going to change
with it until someone spends a lot of time analyzing the portalplayer's I2C
control registers, or finds a datasheet for the damned thing.

FS#5796 - Early encoders such as this one employed a floor of type '0', as
opposed to the more efficient/cheaper floor type '1' which has been used in
all encoders from libvorbis 1.0 onwards, I believe.

The problem appears to be that most DAP decoders can only handle a floor of
  type '1'.

While floor '0' type files like mine are, it turns out, pretty rare, they
still conform to the standards, as can be seen in the documention linked
  below:

  http://www.xiph.org/vorbis/doc/Vorbis_I_spec.pdf
which specifically states that "Floor 0 is not to be considered
  deprecated..."

Files like these require quite a bit of memory to decode, more than what
Rockbox has set aside for the purpose. Adding a real malloc for the codecs
  might help...

And I found both a 32 and 64 bit USB driver was included in the bootloader zip folder too.

Should have looked a lot closer before posting those questions/comments.  Again my apologies.

When I installed the USB driver.....

Okay, I'm being overly cautious obviously and am just sanity checking things before I take the plunge.

How did you install the JZ4760 USB Boot driver?   Did you have to use the Device manager?

Thanks for the answers to my previous general Rockbox question. I have another, more specific question:

- I understand that you need Windows xp or 7 to install Rockbox at the moment. I can get to such a computer in order to do this, however at home I use a Mac for connecting to my xduoo x3 and adding files and such. Will this still be possible with Rockbox installed? In other words, once I install Rockbox using windows 7, can I then still connect it to a Mac as usual?

ok *phew* unit working again....what have you been using to extract the driver files?

Happy for you! How did you make it Working again?
Mine still dead, with or without sdcard, ( I'm sure it's fully charged), it doesnt power on, and when connected ,it is not seen by m'y computer anymore (error, "unknown or defected USB device"). Tomorow I will try to see if there is another tool made by xduoo to flash it again...

When Mine died for a while in this process. I noticed, that I removed the card and put my music card back in, followed by the reset. I dont know if it helps you. But for me it worked. I gave up the idea of bricking mine, with win 10. will go to a friend who has 7 or xp next week.;)

Gah, no X3 today. tomorrow, hopefully... :(

I'm pretty sure the lack of ability to set minutes is because the rockbox build is beta and not complete, I think he said he knew about it and it was getting fixed later, but I could be wrong.
