xDSD Gryphon: birth of a ‘head-fi’ legend

If I do not care about power output, is there a legit reason to get a diablo or a signature over the gryphon?
Diablo is a little bit better, but do realize, can be to powerfull for many IEm’s. For the money the gryphon is very good. But would give you the advise listen to the mojo2 as well (it sound significant better).

I owned the gryphon xdsd, but would I do it again I would go for the mojo2. Right now I went for a astell and kern player.

I would think not, but it is up to your individual tastes. It is my opinion that the Gryphon gives me everything I need in a portable, and as you said having power-hungry cans might sway me to the Diablo.

Cheers!!

Gryphon is great.

I am testing NEO iDSD2 since 2 weeks now and I am not sure if I will keep it to replace Gryphon on my desk.
iDSD2 is more detailed but not a night and day - Gryphon as DAC/Amp sounds more fun to my ears, slightly warmer.

Gryphon connected as a DAC to an external amp is another story.
I wanted to simplify my setup because sometimes I am connecting Gryphon DAC to Violectric V280 amp
(via balanced 4.4 to 2x XLR cable) and this combo sounds better to my ears and taste than much more expensive Violectric V590 or Burson Conductor 3X.
Also better (more engaging and magic) than RME Adi-2 DAC FS or Mojo2 connected to V280.
I had high hopes that maybe NEO iDSD2 will replace this bulky set but it looks I probably have to wait for next gen Pro iDSD Signature to beat it.

Diablo2 unfortunatelly lacks X-Bass/Presence feature what is a deal breaker for me.

Has anyone had an issue where the Gryphon won’t output sound when the battery gets below 50 or 60%? I need to connect it to power to get sound working again. It will also work if I turn the volume above 100, but that’s way too loud.

It looks like I am the only one with this problem. Sadly, I can't get any response from @iFi audio customer support or the store I bought it from. I had previously opened a ticket when it first happened way back in February 2023 and iFi directed me to contact the retailer; the problem was very intermittent at that time, so I didn't return it which I now regret. It happens regularly now and often won't output sound without being connected to power, unless I turn the volume over 100. The battery appears to be fine; it's hard to say since it needs to be plugged in to work most of the time. But when it does work without being plugged in, the battery seems to operate normally.

This is a real shame since it's a great unit.

See if you can reopen a ticket, (or start a new one) when you get a response explain what happened. If you don't get anywhere PM me the Support Ticket number and I'll see if I can help in any way.

Sorry you had issues, maybe we can get it sorted out.

Cheers!!

@iFi audio

Is there any chance that the Gryphon BT AptX Adaptive can be upgraded to 96 kHz or is that a hardware chip limitation? AptX Lossless would also be nice but I'm pretty sure it's not possible...

I honestly do not know, but I will ask and have an answer for you "hopefully" sooner than later.

My gut reaction is no but that's not an acceptable answer..lol

Thanks!

I have a couple of other devices that operate AptX Adaptive at 96 kHz but my Gryphon only indicates 48 kHz on the display. I remember that there where some BT firmware updates previously, and thought maybe it could be added... I did a quick search and 96 kHz is supposed to be a supported mode...

Yes, you are correct the Gryphone does do 96khz on BT see here...

Some notes...

Use Tidal or Qobuz, verify the file you are playing is 96khz
Be sure the Gryphon is updated with the latest firmware (For Xmos and Bluetooth)

What is the device you are using to "transmit" perhaps it is a setting in developer options (if it is Android)

If this doesn't help, please reach out to our support and perhaps they can direct you further.

I'm using the Creative BT-W5 dongle... Again I am getting 96Khz on other devices, just not the Gryphon. I suspect it may be a limitation of the Qualcomm chip (or firmware). Can you verify the actual BT chip used in the Gryphon?
