xDSD Gryphon: birth of a ‘head-fi’ legend
Nov 24, 2021 at 3:15 AM Post #496 of 3,834
I think I will purchase a Gryphon as well. I want a device which replaces just everything and I think 1W will be even enough for my HE1000V2 since even the Qudelix drives the headphone more than loud enough, but lacks bass and controlled texture due to missing power.
Do we have anyone here with (almost) Totl full size headphones and can share his/her experience?
Putting the numbers into a HP power calculator I get a max DBSPL of 120db with that headphone @ 1W and approximately 6V.

The output impedance of the Gryphon is low enough and the voltage capability from the 4.4mm balanced output is able to output > 6V. My guess only is that the HE1000V2 will sound like an HE1000V2 driven from a Gryphon.

Battery life will be less than optimal and I'm sure there will be some perhaps audible distortion but then again 120db is not a level you will listen at for too long. :)

120db is way to loud. I am usually listen with 80 to 95db.

But thanks. That is what I already assumed. It seems that I will purchase a Gryphon in the upcoming few days.
But I need to get a 4.4mm cable somewhere too to be able to test the device properly

I forgot the S/PDIF input so just testing that one too now, it works great.

Using the xDuoo X10T II controlled using HibyLink from my phone. Headphone is the AudioQuest NightOwl and music currently is Tanita Tikaram - Ancient Heart direct from a microSD card.

The Gryphon truly does bring out the best of the NightOwl, I can't fault it, from the smooth Bass, clear mids, right up to the sparkling Treble, to my ears, perfect, the best I've ever heard from this headphone, honestly.

If anybody has this combo, unlikely perhaps, I would suggest try it now, please for your own enjoyment.

Ummm, I was very temped by the Gryphon but all this talk of IEMatch effecting sound quality and hiss is putting me off, tbh I don't really understand why the hiss is there in the first place, this seems to be a common problem with ifi amps, my friend bought his ifi zen can round for a headphone meet-up and that thing hissed with iems even on low gain!, yet my Audeze Deckard, that according to ASR forum, measures really poorly was absolutely silent @ full volume on low gain, and barely audible on medium gain, so what is the deal with iFi's topology that's requiring them to have to sell, or incorporate an IEMatch device to fix a problem on their amps?

If it helps I don't hear any hiss with my most sensitive IEM, the Westone W80 and I also don't notice any significant effects when switching on ieMatch.

Remember we all hear stuff differently though, so as always I would suggest a listening test or purchase from a supplier with a good returns policy so you can try before you commit real cash.

And the portal Diablo is a device which does not work with IEM - great 😒😂

Would it work with IEM, it would be such a great device, because the sound was insane with my HE1000V2. But I was not really able to listen with my EE Valkyrie (just very loud, which you usually do not want all the time). And the Valkyrie is not a sensitive IEM.
Why would you post a comment like this without some sort of disclaimer!

Simply saying something does not work with something else is wrong, and with forums these days, some will read your comment and not buy a product based on your statement.

I use my Diablo all the time with my IEMS, and it is wonderful,... IMO

Ya see what I did there...lol :beerchug:

Cheers!!

Please check out the Diablo thread. Almost no one can use the unit with IEM, because even in Eco mode the power is to much and the music is even on the lowest level (10 o’clock) to loud.
And please read my whole post again. I said it does not work with approximately 95% of the IEM. And if you are listen with more than 100db all the time, maybe up to 50% of the IEM could fit with the Diablo.

But nevermind. This will not help anyone here in this thread

I'd be very surprised if Diablo played well with IEMs. My Signature is not as powerful yet I still have trouble getting a usable volume range with most of my IEMs unless I toggle IEMatch.

Witout IEMatch, I get 10 to 11:30 range, below that is channel imbalance and above that it gets too loud.

Then again, for IEMs the GO Blu & Gryphon (I hope) should be better options.

I understand what you are saying, I am saying I just spent over a week in a medical environment with the my Diablo and my IEM's, with no issue.

Now on the subject of db, I'm not sure how one measures that as the meter implanted in my head must have broken a long time ago and is probably unrepairable at this point!:smile::smile:

I have been actively reading the diablo thread all along, and yes I see many of the comments you refer to. All I am trying to say is that one's perception of a product is sometimes based on simple comments they read, and should be approached with great caution. I am sure there are tons of people who have that unit and literally have no idea as to what we are talking about!! lol

I appreciate your feedback, really I do... :beerchug:

Cheers!!

Why are we talking about the Diablo here?

The Ifi xDSD Gryphon IMHO sounds great with every IEM I've tried though, Sennheiser ie900, Westone W80, Shure SE846, Ultimate Ears 18+ Pro, TINHIFI P1.

Edit: With and without ieMatch.
:beerchug::heart_eyes::pray:

That is what I wanted to hear. Lets see if there are some BF offers for the Gryphon (what I do not think, since ifi discounts their products not much and the product is just few days on the market, but the hope dies last :D). Otherwise I will purchase one this weekend. I am looking forward.

I can hear very slight hiss with my Tin Audio T3. Plug the unit into your PC and volume control down - make sure it's on USB and showing on your PC. Plug in and out of the 4.4 socket and listen for a pitch. It's there. The hiss is very slight on the T2 but it's undoubtably present. This is without IEMatch.

Yes, it is a fully balanced design.

Yes, you can and that depends on a chip.

This uses NJW1159? This would indicate SE to BAL conversion. I believe the amp section is fully balanced but something is causing the high noise floor. Either that or my unit has a defect which can absolutely happen.
