X3 firmware updating tips and related important notes & solutions!
Sep 11, 2013 at 1:53 AM Post #31 of 57
I just got my X3 yesterday and immediately tried to upgrade the firmware to version 1.31. The upgrade appeared to work and the machine booted fine; however, it hung when I tried to validate the FW version and now I can't turn it on. I've tried the reset button, the on button, re-installing older firmware, plugging it into the computer -- nothing works. Was I supposed to install each FW increment prior to installing version 1.31?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

not need to install each FW increment prior to installing version 1.31.  for more support you can email to support@fiio.net and our engineer will help you .

sorry now I can solve all the problem by myself cause it is become mission impossible.

Hi again,

When you have a solution, could you post it here, I have also downloaded the latest firmware (in zip format, safer, it avoids f/w corruption during download) but I am reluctant to install it based on your experience.

Thanks ! I do hope you'll find a solution soon.

I have been unable to successfully install Firmware Upgrade 1.31 to my X3, now happily running FW 1.23. When I insert the TF card with FW 1.31 downloaded to it from FiiO' s Facebook page, the X3 screen says it can't find the upgrade file. I've tried it with both a 2gb and a 32 gb Sandisk MicroSD card, both formatted to FAT32. The file shows up on both cards on my Mac computer, but the X3 can't see it for some reason. Any ideas??
Thanks, in advance, for any help!

Just a thought, did you unzip it first? (Try the simple things first ;^)

Thanks for the thought My Mac computer seems to automatically unzip the files upon completion of download so that just the X3-fw file itself shows up in the file manager. I have downloaded it numerous times now from various sources (FiiO, FiiO Facebook page, two different sources mentioned here on HeadFi) and the X3 can't find any of them from the two TF cards I've been using. Although the file appears complete in my Mac file manager, all I can think is that it must not be all there when I move the TF card from the computer to the X3. It's a mystery!

It needs to be called "x3.fw" after unzipping. Maybe the Mac is hiding file extensions so it is name incorrectly. Got to Finder/Preferences and tick "Show all filename extensions" if you think this may be the reason. Someone else got caught out by this a while back.

Wow! That did the trick! I think you should work for FiiO tech support! I'm still waiting to hear back from them. The updating was successful, but on the Systems Setting screen under Info/Storage, it still shows that the Firmware installed is the original (FW1.23 EN) firmware it came with when I bought it. Shouldn't that information change? Although the X3 said the firmware update was successful, how else can I tell if it actually was?

Sorry for all these questions. You've been a great help! I'm just trying to get it right. I love the player by the way!

No problem. Fiio's support is pretty good, but not everyone has a Mac 8^). The info screen should update and show 1.31 so maybe you accidentally re-installed an older version. That is another thing which the Mac makes a bit too easy to do since it automatically renames downloads to not clash, so you can end up with several versions. I'd suggest deleting anything which looks like the firmware download and getting a fresh version to make sure that you have the correct version. I turn off the automatic unpacking of downloads because it's too easy to get caught out if you don't unpack it yourself (yes, that burning smell is my own burnt fingers 8^). The current version is 37.3MB, if that helps (assuming that you are using the recent OS-X which uses 1000 bytes in a kilobyte etc.).

Damn, you're good! Success! Following your instructions resulted in a perfect download and installation of FW 1.31 as now indicated on the Systems Settings screen under Info/Storage!

I imagine that I'll need to continue to do these updates as FiiO continues to de-bug this new machine, so I'm delighted to now know how to download and install future firmware updates. What a difference it makes to know what one is doing, particularly in this virtual world of ours!

Many thanks again for your help, so kindly and generously given.

Cheers!

I'd like to know if you noticed any issue with the new 1.31 F/W ? It seems that some people are experiencing freezes or other behaviors. In particular, is the X3 now really gapless when playing either mp3 or FLAC files. Mine is certainly not with F/W 1.23 (1.25 has a file sorting issue, I have stayed with 1.23 so far). Thanks !

not any special report about freezes issues. and the gapless will be improved in the future.

Alas the sorting issue is still present in the 1.31 version. I see for instance, in browse files mode, a folder sorted as follows :
01-01-Track 1
01-13-Track 13
01-12-Track 12
01-11-Track 11
01-02-Track 2

Impossible to use !

I have reverted to 1.23 one more time.

Yes, this can't be solved even in the future.  maybe you can solve this by rename the files. it is too complex to sort the name by the number/letter after "-"
