X-Fi's --> full support for ALSA ~ Q2/2007

Yeah, Linux is usually a step or two behind the times.

However, there's decent support of RME and M-Audio cards. I've got a couple of M-Audio cards that work fine under ALSA. If you're serious about audio, I think you'd be better off with one of them anyhow.

Nah, my 2SE(0570) is fine under ALSA. I bagged a cheap 2NX on eBay the other night, will see how that sounds
