just bought this little player at best buy because of recommendations of it having excellent redbook and also including dvdaudio. Listened to Buena Vista Social Club DVD-A - was blown away ... wow how can a 60 dollar player sound this good, more listening tests on the way, i hooked it up to my ppa audio setup, was immediately amazed by the soundstage and clarity, good bargain.

Of course i have nothing to compare it to except a friends meridian 507, my maudio revo which it stomps.

Yay. I have a 4900 and I enjoy it a lot as a 2nd DVD player. I also thought that it had awesome redbook, especially for the price. Handily beats out the TBSC, Revo, and RME PAD in my opinion. It's the quality of inexpensive DVD players like this one that made me totally give up on the PC audio thing.

Its video output (at least interlaced) is almost equally impressive.

Interesting. How do DVD-A's sound with just 2-channels (isn't the center channel rather important)? Looks like I might have to pay a visit to Best Buy this weekend

xtreme, is it $60 at your local Bestbuy or is that price for nation wide? Bestbuy deleted 3950 from their website and 4900 isn't listed also. Is 3950 and 4900 being discontinued?

On Toshiba's website, the SD-4900 and the SD-3960 are still listed.

I am very tempted to get this SD-4900; it will make a great match to my Sony NS500. On the other hand, isn't Toshiba coming out with a universal player soon?

Decisions....decisions....

The BVSC DVD-A is a bit of a "ringer" in that it's not only a fantatsic recording but the DVD-A is extremely well done. Hope it doesn't set the bar too high for your other CDs. Enjoy!

yeah i did get to other cds and was equally impressed ... telarc ring without words .... Pink Floyd(Live) - Delicate Sounds of Thunder beethovens 9th dvd-a - beck sea changes dvd-a ...all sound amazing .. my maudio revo plays dvd-a's so i was amazed at the improvement this player has over that pesky soundcard.

What do you mean that your Revo plays back DVD-A? I know the hardware can do it but there isn't any software available that would let you do that.

windvd platinum has dvd-a audio pack ... but maxes out at 96khz ... but yes it plays them.
you can goto the revo control panel and see it goto 96000 when you play dvda or 88200 with a dvda like beck sea change. there is a 24bit/96khz audio playback checkbox in its setup too. unchecking it music will not play, some dvd-a have a cd quality layer so going between the too i noticed a remarkable difference between 16bit 48khz and 24bit 96khz layer.
