Bought a good looking pair of HD540 Ref1 300ohm last week.
Want to discover the history behind this pair.
pads, cable (black L red R, steel or copper) and estimated year of manufacture
Please help, thanks[/QUOTE]

These information are not so important...anyway:
your pads are not original all pleather, you can choose what is R or L channel simply plug-unplug to and earcups to other, cable should be copper, year: about second half of 80's.
Most important is ....your setup and how they sounds to you....
Write your sensation.....

Looks like my Sennheiser hd540 reference is the 600ohm. How do you se if its reference i or ii?
What do you recommend to drive them? Not to expensive preamp before my soundcard.

Is there any spec out there?
Frekvense curve?

Thanks
Anders

Technically that's not entirely true.
The very earliest HD540's had identical headbands to the HD430.

Most of I were 600 ohms....Hd-540 should be great for monitoring. For sure is much better to use headphone amplifier.
But if you will be not satisfied I will buy your hd-540 :)))))))))))

It has the old plugg. Really nice.
So how much do you think of price?

I don't know, I never heard mk1, someone say it is better than mk2, someone same mk2, someone worst.....
Old plug you mean that kind with multipolar adaptor 5 pins?(if I remember well)
About price, want to sell? If yes write me PM :))))))))))))))))))))))

Comparing my HD540 Reference II to the HD560 Ovation (first one made in Germany, NOT the II made Ireland):
The HD560 sounds a lot FASTER, better overall detail, and more punchier bass. I would say the HD560 beats the HD540 in timbre and I love my HD540's but the HD560 is just a different beast. I prefer it over all the Sennheisers I've had ( HD600, HD650, HD580, HD250, HD540, Unipolar 2000 and some other cheap ones.).

Could be something simple like a small hair that's worked it's way behind the screen-mesh and is rattling on the diaphragm.
Or it could be more complex like mechanical/electronic driver failure... which is normally impossible to fix.
