I currently have a MHDT Constantine plus and a pair of ad-700s. I am thinking about buying an amp under $250. Would I see more benefit from buying a new pair of cans ala AD-900 or from an amp?
It's a tough spot, when you upgrade to phones that would really benefit from an amp, then you need to spend in some multiple, e.g. $200 for the phones and $200 for the amp. Or more.
But wait, wait, wait, you're running your AD700 directly out of a DAC?
haha, no I have mind you, RCA into a little box I have for hooking up to my tv, but, no, I am currently running the DAC into my M-Audio AV 40's and using the headphone out of that.
All headphones benefit from amp in certain degree. Heard the AD700 drive with SPL Auditor in the store and sound really good! I rather to have a good amp to my headphone well than to have a good headphone but under deliver.
I would go for the amp, This way you can build up your system around it, or decided you want to go another way later. But to answer your question, yes, you should notice a difference. And if you don't right away, give your ears time to adapt to the new sound.

I have Audio Tecnica A500's and frankly they don't sound any better with my X-can than via headphones out of my integrated amp or cd player.
Not sure about the AD700's however.
