Worth selling AKG K701 for Senn HD650?? or keep both
May 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM Post #3 of 18
Depends what you like and what amp you're using. Personally I would recommend the AKG701 over the HD650, however I would also recommend the HD600 over the AKG701. However it largely depends (obviously) on your amp. Personally I would keep the AKG's unless you only listen to classical and jazz. (The Seen HD600 and 650 both struggle with other genres, though are still good, for the price if looking to play rock/metal look elsewhere).

Hope that helps. I'm sure some more experienced head-fier will come and show me up any moment know/

Keep them both, at least long enough to make a firm decision as-to which pair you definitely prefer. The K701 and HD650 constitute a fairly clean line of demarcation on the H-F threads--although some keep and enjoy both, so it might be informative to know where you stand personally.

Well I am running my K701 via a modded MF X-can V3. K701 is kind of bass shy to some music that I listen to. This make me abit discomfort as my ear is trying 'find' the bass which is kind of missing or soft. Is that true that running K701 in balanced state(XLR connection) will improve the bass and the overall sound?

I don't know about balancing the 701, but the reports I've read say there's not much of a difference. Rewiring and balancing cans makes a difference, but won't change significatively the overall character of the phones.

If you need more bass than the K701 are delivering for you, I'd try the HD650, they're way more bassy, darker and kind of "slower" if that makes any sense for you. If you want to retain the sense of speed but having a more balanced bass, I'd go for the HD600 instead of the 650.

I have the K701, and I was going to buy a HD650 and keep both. But now that I have a D2000, I scrapped that plan, I no longer want the Senn. The D2000 combines the best qualities of both the HD650 and K701. Strong bass, lively highs, smooth sound

had both the 701 and 6X0. I liked the 701 until i started upgrading. Sold my original SE 701 and got a balanced one, but it couldnt stand up to my balanced 600/650 so i sold it recently.

To a person who prefers the 701, the 650 sounds like it has major bass boost. The highs arent as clear as the 701. The soundstage isnt as big. (a matched balanced setup fixes the 650's problems and makes them better IMO than the 701 on ALL dimensions except the air)

To a person who prefers the 6x0, the 701 sounds like it has no bass. It is laidback like the 650, but to the extreme (last row seating type sound - everything happens far in front). Might be harsh on the upper mids on some setups. Might sound thin because there is so much air that makes the headstage seem huge.

HD600 is sort of between the 650 and 701, it is like a 701 in uppermid with bass (80% the 650's). The mids tend to be laidback, but other freq can be highly aggressive and upfront on some recordings. Doesnt have the same air as the 701.

The (SE) K701 sounding more laid back than the (SE) HD650 has certainly not been my listening experience. Ditto for the "no bass" observation; IMHE the bass on the K701 actually goes deeper and maintains better control compared to the HD650.

That said, I have yet to--and would very much like to--hear the HD650 balanced. : )

Lastly, I found the sound of the (SE) HD600 to be much more balanced and believable than the (SE) HD650.

I don't know if I'd say the HD-600 is "between" the K-701 and HD-650. The two brands are very different in their approach to sound. And all three of these headphones are particular about amps. If I were you, I'd dig through impressions of various Senns with your amp before buying anything.

I want both! I can't imagine selling off my K701s, most of my jaw-dropping moments have been with the K701. It all comes down to preference, but the K701 is exactly the sound I want with acoustic music.

I'd say both earthflyer and Uncle Erik are right. It's a matter of how you look at it.

I tend to think of the HD600 as a perfect blend of the K701 and HD650 sounds. Although Unc is right when he says that that's not strictly true, and each has its own distinct signature and needs to be heard on its own and with the others.

Still, I hear the HD600 as the best of the other two.............

I'd say they are very different in their presentation. It would be worth keeping both unless you don't like the sound of one of them
