I have seen a few threads with reccomendations for the best recorded and mastered albums... but I haven't seen one for the worst. If there is one and I missed it on the search, please post the link. I think it would be fun to list what albums drive you nuts with the recording quality.

I will get started with a lesser known band but this happens to be one of my favorite albums right now...

Taproot - Blue Sky Research. Taproot's BSR album is full of digital static. When everthings get lot you can hear the pop and crackle of a digital recording gone bad. They even mixed a part from an old song on an older album on top of a song on this album, and it just doesn't sound right.

RHCP - Californication. Poster child of poster children.

    This gets my vote.

XTC 2001 remasters - Oranges & Lemons and Nonsuch. Disappointing.

"How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" by U2 on the English import LP.

Can you say "overcompressed"? You don't even hear the drums.

Ouch, does that include sacd and vinyl?

I haven't heard the SACD or vinyl, but if they're the same mastering, yes. I tried to listen to her latest album at a meet with HD800s. After 15 seconds, I couldn't take it any more.

The Flaming Lips deserve not only inclusion on this list, but a gold star.

I love the Lips, but several recordings are practically unlistenable.

Tru dat. Rented it from my library. Not only was there a big crack in it that prevented tracks 7 through 10 from playing, but the rest of it sounded sub-par. The album isn't near the level of War, etc. in quality, and while not the worst compression I've heard, it's pretty bad.

In their defense, that's the sound their going for. Doesn't stop it from sounded pretty nasty, but doesn't stop them from being one of my favorites.

"Vapor Trails" by Rush is the first album that comes to mind. Absolutely terrible mastering job.

Oasis. "Some Might Say" - but I understand they've always been a poster child for the volume wars anyways.

Slip It In by Black Flag. Though I read that Greg Ginn Mixed/Mastered it that way because he was pissed off at Henry Rollins and purposely mixed his vocals down.

Beyonce - I Am... Sasha Fierce

This is the worst mastered album I've ever heard. You can hear tons of distortion even at really low volume.
