Worst band names

Hehe, I think Led Zeppelin is a great name. It shows that band had a self effacing sense of humor. Some band member of The Who said that the band would sink like a Led Zeppelin. So they made it their name. Showed them the finger, didn't they?! *chuckle* Somewhat like Jefferson Airplane's Best of album being named "The Worst Of Jefferson airplane".

There are a couple of real shockers in this thread..

John Zorn's Masada tasteless? I think it makes perfect, beautiful sense, especially coming out of John Zorn's mouth!

Led Zeppelin a bad name? The Beach Boys? The Beatles? Captain Beefheart? The story behind Beefheart's name in particular is VERY funny. I'm kind of shocked by all of these accusations in particular.

But most, I'm shocked that somebody actually said The Yeah Yeah Yeah's had worse music than their band name. I'll admit, it sucks when I try to say that band's name, but I think that the band may be one of the most unique and artistic punk bands to hit the scene in a LONG time!

That story is well known to me. It doesn't make "Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band" a better band name, though.

Here's the background on their name:

Quote:

LED ZEPPELIN - Jimmy Page was drinking with Moon and Entwhistle, who were bitching about their band mates Daltrey and Townshend. They joked about the two of them starting a band with Jimmy, and one of them said "Yeah, that will go over like a lead balloon". When Jimmy formed his own band, he remembered this and thought "Lead Zeppelin" would be good, both from that conversation and the heavy/light contradiction similar to the band named IRON BUTTERFLY. They decided to drop the "a" so Americans wouldn't mispronounce it.

It's a blatent misspelling to patronize the idiots of America. The name only seems cool now because of the greatness of the band...otherwise it's kind of bad.

First there are the myriad bad names that are just baby-talk jibberish. Chumbawamba come immediately to mind.

Then there are the impronouncables: KMFDM, 0))), (-), D.V.D.A., KRS, Si*Se to name but a few

Then the "lets pick a few words at random": The Go! Team, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Hang On The Box

My personal pet peeve, "AOL" names: 4 Non Blondes, backstreet Boyz, Motley Crue, Too $hort, US3, Was (Not Was), Korn

Finally, Nonsensical sentances: Hitler Stole my Potato, Frankie Goes To Hollywood

I am no rah-rah America type, but thats just an absurd comment. It was made so that people in all countries would know the correct pronounciation. After all, I dont think it would make anyone an idiot to pronounce Lead 'leed'.

The name is still great, regardless of the band. Largely because 'Z' is such a cool letter.

Would you argue, then, that Led Zeppelin isn't a bad band name for the reasons that many here are arguing so?

Don Van Vliet's alias goes far beyond that joke - his music is perfectly represented by the name that he uses. To me, that makes a fitting band name.

Arctic Monkeys

the word monkeys just ruins any band name imo. The Blow Monkeys, remember them?

Didn't think so.....
