Ready for some tuberolling
TFR38.gif

Currently, I have :

6DE7 : a pair of GE, Sylvania, RCA (GE was the stock tube)

5AR4 : stock Chinese tube

5U4G : RCA used, but strong

and 1 x Raytheon 5U4G : used, but strong
1 x Tung-Sol 5U4G : NOS
1 x Telefunken/Mullard 5AR4 : used, but strong

are going to be here soon....

dunno, should I return the used tubes, and get some more NOS tubes?

The amp cost $600 including the shipping...

and I bought the tubes on ebay, which cost a total of $150 or so...

Just a quick question :

I plugged a 5U4G tube in, and I found out the filament(?) thingy doesn't get as bright as 5AR4 tube did...

Is this because 5U4G has Heater Current of 3.0 A, while 5AR4 has 1.9A ?

Because the constructions of these two tubes are different, the bright is not the same.

Ah, thanks alot. I was curious coz 5AR4 had a bright glow...and 5U4G has a dim glow...so I was wondering if there's something wrong with my 5U4G tube..

Glow is not an indicator, unless there is none. You can have the same two tubes by the same maker from the same run and the glow from the filament will appear different. It depends upon how much of the filament is visable and how much getter may be in the way of seeing the filament/heater.

Heh, received two NOS 5U4G tubes today....one Tung-Sol, and one Raytheon...

Currently listening some music with Raytheon 5U4G tube + 2x Sylvania 6DE7's...

Very detailed highs, but not so harsh (DT990's are pretty sibilant), improved midrange, Tight & deep Bass....

I'm in audio-bliss!

gotta get some good NOS 5AR4 tubes...as they are said to be better sounding than 5U4G tubes..

The more extensive the power supply the less you will notice the influence of the rectifier tube. On this amp it is not extensive and you should notice the change more than a supply with inductors caps and ressitors in the supply. Here you have an RC something, I don't have a schematic but I like to be able to influence the sound with the rectifier and I think you would have real fun with a good Mullard from the early 60's or late fifties and then the metal base GZ34, the supreme one. I have these in NOS and I am glad I got them when I did. They last forever and nothing compares, besides they look cooool. I like amps that use the 5AR4/GZ34 just for the rectifier. This may sound strange but if built correctly the GZ34 can really do good and I love the glow.
