Can the tubes in the WooAudio 3 be changed - I read about tube changing for different sound quality but some units need an update or mod. to take different tubes.

You can use any of 6DJ8, 6922, 7308, E88CC, ECC88, E188CC for the driver tubes.

6AS7 (and all its variations), 6080, 6080WB, 5998 for the power tube.

IIRC Mr. Wu will make a WA3 that uses 6SN7s rather than 6922s for an extra $50. 6SN7s are usually described as having a more laid-back and rolled off top end.

Also check out Jamato's posts, he's had good luck using some unique tubes in the Woo. I never have any luck finding them tho...

Hi Highfling;

I see you also have a DT 990. I do have a 20 year old modded DT 990 (600 ohm version).

How does your DT 990 work with the WooAudio 3?

Thanks

I have tried the 6SN7's in my Woo3 and I would stick with the 6DJ8 types. The 6DJ8 types, in this application, have a more lively presentation and open airy sound. Actually I prefer the 6BZ7, which is the predecessor of the 6DJ8. It has slightly different operating points but works fine. It is inexpensive and to me, in a number of applications that I have tried it in, superior to 6922's and 6DJ8 types. You can find it in black plate and gray, both of which sound good.

The Tungsol 5998 is also a very nice power tube for this amp.

They sound pretty good, I'm a bit more enamored with the MS-2/WA3 combination however, but that may change with more burn in.
