And as mentioned before, I was also really impressed with his Semi run even more so than the finals - the way he came back from last place was really thrilling to see!

The figure skating with the Chinese pair, where she banged her knee... that was very moving, although I'm surprised they won the silver after that. Unbelievable. What a night at the Olympics.

Since when is the US "bad at winter sports"?

Amature figure skating is so fixed and has been obviously so at least since '94. Given the scandals that happened as a result, I doubt I'm blazing new ground saying that.

I'm sure that most of the placements have already been decided on, but so far the pairs seemed fair enough.

Edit - I think with that Chinese pair, that they were really strong in the short program, and the totals are combined. So their strong score from the short program, combined with the fact that they did do all the elements eventually in the free program meant they'd get a silver. The pairs were not that good this year... or rather, there weren't many standouts, no Gordeava's & Grinkovs this year.

If you want the real artistry, the pros are where it's at. Amature skating has put rules to ensure you see nothing of artistic value.

second edit - to correct the year. Ice Dance played itself so obviously in '94 onwards.

Huh? In the 2002 winter games the U.S. won 10 gold medals (3rd most gold medals that year behind germany and norway), and was second behind germany for overall medals with 34.

As far as I know the U.S. also has the most gold medals so far for this year.

Gordeeva and Grinkov were just the epitome of what pair skating should be. "Grace, Power and Speed". They had it all. It's really too bad we didn't get to enjoy them more.

Yes, unfortunately, athletism is looked higher upon then artistry. That's why we see these youngsters, who are quite athletic but still in the early stages of becoming artists, skating in the Olympics. Too bad Michelle Kwan won't be around to show everyone what skating should look like (JMO).

Yes, what is dance worth if you can't throw a quad/triple?

Yeah, I'm more into something of artistic value and choreography that makes sense. That's why skating hasn't been worth much to me since T&D retired. But at least I got to see them skate live before that happened.
