I think your view on how digital content playback works is not quite accurate.

My understanding is that you can not uniliterally define whether you can play for example HD-DVD discs. You need to get a license and you need to prove that your playback device preserves the intellectual properties of the owners of the content.

This is true for any consumer electronics player that will only do hidef over HDCP protected digital links as well as for Windows or any other OS that wants to get a license for playback.

From that perspective there is no difference between playing a HD-DVD on a standalone player vs. the PC.


Superaudio CD for example is not licensed (and probably never will) to be played on a PC.


None of this has anything to do with Vista as far as I can tell. The rules com from the content owners and you either comply or don't play.

I doubt the operating system or standard windows software will DRM your files that aren't DRMed before.
