Do you select headphones or do you use the 2.1 setting? Headphones would seem like the obvious choice but I have a feeling it would only degrade the sound quality.

I normally select 2.1 because I think headphone puts all these weird things that are meant to enhance headphone audio... Something that I don't really need.

I dont think that setting does anything. I just put it to "No speakers" and got perfect sound out of my EMU 0202! So yea dont owrry about it too much. If you;re hearing differences, then they are probably imagined.

Try to use ASIO if you have a compatible sound card, or KX Mixer for older Creative models without ASIO. The sound is much better when Windows is not in charge anymore.

The advanced speaker settings seem to matter only if your application reads the data from the registry.
