or will someone with extremely untrained ears not fully be able to appreciate them?

I mostly listen to music on spotify, maybe a few EDM podcasts on itunes, etc.

I am not a recorder by any means, and just want nice comfortable headphones I can wear for long times while studying in the library (need to be closed).

I have a set of Philips Citiscape Uptown, and tbh they don't sound much better than my ipod earbuds lol. I would keep them but they are too big for my head, because the only time I can hear a significant difference is when I push the headphones against my ear to manually get a tighter clamp.

Heya,

Nope.

The Uptowns & M50's are pretty similar actually.

The problem you're using spotify, podcasts, itunes. Don't expect to hear more from compressed streaming content.

If you want a good isolating headphone that can run from anything with variable frequency responses for fun/customization to your needs, look into the Beyer Custom One Pro. It's pretty forgiving of streamed/compressed content.

Very best,
