WiiM Streamers Mini and Pro

It depends on the DAC, but I think 24/192 is the limit for optical.
It depends on the DAC, as well as on every transceiver along the signal path. I'd hazard a guess that a substantial majority of all legacy TOSLINK-equipped components in circulation today have an upper limit of 96kHz.

Given a choice between 24/192 optical or shielded digital coax, I'd still select the latter to eliminate the possibility of jitter issues with the signal. Fortunately, all my components support digital coax (including my ordered-but-not-yet-shipped WiiM Pros).

I think it might also depend on the optical cable itself. I briefly had the original WiiM, and when I tried it with my older (and longer) optical cable, I could only get it up to 24/96, but when I substituted the much shorter optical cable that came with the WiiM, it worked fine at 24/192.

However, I didn't realize that jitter could be an issue with optical, so I'll probably be using my shielded digital coax cable for the hookup between the WiiM Pro and my DAC.

Are we still expecting 10 DEC release for the pro? I need another streamer for a secondary speaker setup ASAP.

For those of you using Wiim, is wifi connection stable?

One thing I love about the Node is solid connection/software stability.

Judging from available info, looks like the wiim pro will be a versatile streamer at an exceptional price.
No issues with wifi connection in the couple of weeks I've had my Wiim Mini. Same with the software, works perfectly.
It's a fantastic device for the money, far better than the RPi4 I was previously running.
My only wishes:
- desktop or web browser app
- coax digital out (on the Mini), as my DAC only supports 96khz over toslink

Can't have everything though and these are compromises I'm happy to live with.

Thanks and good to hear.

Looks like the Pro ver. has the coax out you're looking for.

yup and I'm toying with the idea of upgrading. Need to see UK pricing first. The Mini was £80, phenomenal value.
The most sensible thing is to acknowledge I'm never going to discern the difference between a 96khz and a 192khz stream... but this isn't a sensible hobby!

Yeah don't really care much for PCM beyond 96khz. 192khz and beyond, e.g., DSD is a total waste of storage space IMO. Just my 02 cents and YMMV of course. I'm more excited about better CPU higher DRAM/flash in the pro. And possible Roon integration down the road.

Yep, I ordered within a minute of seeing your link. I had a feeling they were going to go fast.

Although not an issue for me, I'm wondering if their second batch will change the way the RCA connections are placed within the housing, making it easier for those folks with larger cable ends? In any case, I'm happily waiting. I got to try the original WiiM briefly a few months ago, and loved how it sounded along with the intuitive, stable, and easy to use interface, but when I found out the Pro version was coming out soon, I decided to wait, so I'm especially happy that I got in on the first batch. Thanks for that link : )

EDIT: Just got the update from Amazon with a Dec. 17th-20th delivery date.

Yip, been using 24/192 over toslink since the WiiM firmware was updated to allow that. Now we need another link busting the 24/96 Chromecast limit
I don't believe there's anything inherent in the Chromecast protocol itself that limits transmission below 24/192 resolution. It's a matter of the hardware (and perhaps of the content source). While the ubiquitous Chromecast Audio device's firmware limits output to 24/96, the Primare NP5 streamer supports 24/192 via Chromecast, and apparently the WiiM Pro will do so as well. Of course, the DAC on the receiving end will need to support it, as well as the service providing the content. I suppose it's possible some Chromecast-supporting services may incorrectly assume that since all the downstream Chromecast endpoints are limited to 24/96, that's the maximum they'll send over that protocol. I'll be testing a bunch of those services once I add the Pro to my equipment chain.

I’ve already reported that I can use Chromecast up to 24/192 to the WiiM Pro, but that Qobuz caps it at 24/96 - maybe WiiM can dupe Qobuz into delivering 24/192 depending on how Qobuz determines the capability of the target device. Still, being able to use the Qobuz app to cast to the WiiM Pro is a feather in the latter’s cap.

I only made the comment as some people were saying, like some do for toslink, that Chromecast tops out at 24/96 despite being shown evidence to the contrary…

Have you brought this up on Qobuz's community support site? The Qobuz reps there are often quite responsive to those reporting issues like this.

Many suggest that to get the most (in terms of sound quality) from WiiM Mini or Pro, one should use an external DAC.
So my question to you: will SMSL Sanskrit 10 MKIII be appropriate or would it be an overkill ?
If considered an overkill, could you please suggest a cheaper DAC for the job.
