Why I don't wear cheap sunglasses

For years I've always worn cheap sunglasses but they always end up cracking or breaking without physical stress.

3 years ago, I went to the mall and paid $150 for a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses and they are still in perfect condition.

I know I could get them cheaper on Shop Sunglasses NZ but when you go to the mall, it's easier to try them on and you will get a more accurate fitting. So that's I why I don't buy online and I pay full price at the official mall store.

So yeah, it's worth it buying expensive sunglasses.
Totally agree. Sometimes, paying more upfront really does pay off in the long run. The durability and fit of quality sunglasses like Ray-Bans are hard to beat, and being able to try them on in person makes a big difference. It’s not just about the brand, but the build, lens quality, and comfort. Sounds like your investment was well worth it.

One of those unexpected threads on HF

My two cents: the biggest problem with cheap sunglasses is that they may not offer the UV protection they should.

Sunglasses reduce the amount of visible light, therefore dilating your pupils. But if they don't filter out the invisible UV light, your lens (behind the pupil) is exposed to much higher levels of UV, which significantly increases the risk of developing cataracts in later life.

Regularly wearing cheap sunglasses with a poor UV filter is a bad idea if you value your eyesight.

I've seen a video on why in modern days people eye sight goes bad. They say it's because we stay indoors and not get the sun. Your eyes do need healthy dose of the outdoor natural light to keep healthy. I think there too much scare about sunlight, but eyes do need exposure to natural light.

Also, how sensitive you are to sunlight depends on your race. Races with brown eyes are not sensitive to sunlight like races with clear eyes where light can easily enter, and have better night vision. So, it's not that straightforward. In certain countries people are totally fine without wearing sunglasses.

There's a lot of speculation that goes on. Awhile back, there was a scare of blue light, but that has died down.
