Why have so many people re-purchased the HD650s so many times?

Nope...I have them right next to each other. I like 580 because it has a good "stage" sound and I like 650 because it has a good "studio" sound....but basic sound character is classic Senn sound that I have come to love.

^ interesting, 580's and 650's? If it were me I would want to have two headphones of very different sound signatures to complement each other (grado/senn combo seems like a good idea). I'm guessing you have them at different locations though?

I have repurchased them once now. I think that now they are to stay.

Oh yes, you should. The moment I did that, the HD-580 went up for sale.

Because they are amazing headphone for the money and they keep on improving with every upgrade. For the price they are very tough to beat. I can see myself very happy with just the HD-650 + Zu and SDS.

I find it kind of terrifying that people describe HD650s as "beaters." I treat my pair like a faberge egg.

But I second the arguments that people buy HD650s as a consensus good entry point for high-end headphones, then sell them to try other stuff (they're pretty expensive when you're starting out and fetch a decent amount in resale), then buy them back to see if they now sound better with the amp/source you've upgraded five times since you first owned them.

Well, if you buy a used one....they are not that expensive. When you have the R10, L3000, W2002....you need to be a lot more careful of your headphones. I managed to damage the W2002 cups before and that was no fun. The HD-650 can be tossed around without dent or scratch.

When I was new to the hobby I tried the 650 with my Ipod and portable amp- it sounded terrible to me. 6 months later, armed with far better equipment and spurred on by the wild claims of the "Cheap 580's at Amazon" thread, a purchase of the 580s led me, once again, to the 650s.

As it turns out, lesser sources/ amps just don't do justice to the 650, while nicer equipment/ cables make them outstanding. I enjoy the 650 in my current setup more than I enjoyed the Omega 2/ KGSS. Nothing against the Omega 2/KGSS, I just think I may have a preference for dynamics.

Bought and sold/gave away the HD650 some 4 or 5 times now, damn things keeping coming back like a faithful old dog
