Who uses a dvd player as their source?

I use a modified Sony DVP-NS755V (modified by SACDmods ) which I purchased used here as my main source and plays SACD. I don't have much to compare it to, but I love it.

Hi,
I can't recommend the Toshiba SD9200 enough. Excellent built quality with 25 lbs copper chassis. Stereophile Class A rated CD/DVD-A player. The SD9200 offers excellent bass response and definitely sound much better than the Phillips 963SA. If you search hard enough in Audiogon, you can pick up one for about 350 dollars.

I'm using a cheap $100 Sony DVD player as a transport for my Ack! dAck! D/A converter. It seems to do the job fairly well. Of course, it does double duty as a video source, cutting down on the number of components in my rack.

I sent of my Denon 3910 to Underwood for their Ultimate Upgrade, so I should be using that universal as source pretty soon.

I use my Panasonic DVD-s35 as a source, it was only 80 bucks and it sounds pretty decent IMO. I mainly use My APX as my source however.

I used Sony DVP-NS900V SACD/DVD/CD player for almost two years.
Now it is a SACD player and a transport to feed PCM to my Benchmark DAC1.
Using DAC1 only provides a subtle improvement to sound quality, mainly in terms of alleviating treble oddities in redbook format.

For a couple of years I had a Sony NS-500V as my main source. Then SACDmodded it, then got the Toshiba 3950 and modded it, then sold the Sony. So my two main sources have both been DVD players.

I have a Samsung HD-841 they go for $100 US at costco. I had it modded by Ric at Electronic Visionary Systems and the difference is amazing. I can't really tell the difference between the layers on my SACD hybrids so if you are really into SACD you may want to avoid the player, but both the redbook and DVD-A are outstanding. The player is still burning in however, so the SACD playback may still improve but I am not holding my breath. Part of Rics mod is to add a male IEC so you can use aftermarket cords. I just finished my first asylum cord and added it to my system and now it sounds even better.

There is a thread on modding the Toshiba 4960/Samsung HD-841 on audio circle if you are interested in doing it yourself.

The great thing about the modded Samsung is that you don't need a DAC. If you buy any of the universal players I would recommend picking up some feet for them though. I added some vibrapods to my samsung before I got it modded and it made a hit you over the head difference. Most notably there was more base and it was a lot richer too.

I used to but not anymore!

I started with a Cambridge 540D DVD player, then upgraded to a Denon 2900 and then I finally saw the light when I shopped for a dedicated CD player. I bought an Arcam CD23T and that thing is way better than any DVD player I heard. When I was shopping, I must have listened to at least 10-15 different CD player in the $500 to $2000 market and I would say most of them would be better than any DVD player in the same price range. Don't want to make the modded DVD player owners angry so I'm not going to judge those since I've never heard one.

By the way, in case it makes a difference, this opinion is based on listening to cd players with home speakers/amplifier rigs not on headphones.
