Who still has the Sony SA5000?

Does anyone know where I can find spare pads for these?

Also, do you guys think this can sounds best with SS or tube amps? I read that tube amps help with the brightness, but thought I would check again here. I think tube amps suck for low impedance cans though? I guess it'll suck if/when I get HE400's but whatever

I'm looking mainly at the Schiit Valhalla or Lyr

I don't think that spare pads are available anymore, unfortunately. You could try getting a pair of SA3000 pads, which are still made by a third party in China.

I wouldn't get too worried about an amplifier for these. They don't take much power to get going, and their sound really won't change much with various amplifiers. I would get an amplifier that will work now and with other headphone purchases down the road.

I found them changed a lot with amplifier.. i tried them out of a Maverick Audio Tube Magic A1 through an HRT MSII and it was an excellent improvement in overall sound from what I am used to

My SA5000 is basically NOS, only put about 10hrs on them...

Funnily enough, I'm listening to them now, and whilst they'd never replace the LCD2s, they're really not so bad at all :)

These shine with SACD players (all other models too SA1000 & SA3000), everything else they dont sound 'powerful'. I dont know much about the inards of SACD players but I guess their built in amp, does the job.

Are there two versions of these headphones ?

Sony did opt for a cheaper ear pad in the years before they were discontinued.

The old original pads are very tight and firm, the newer ones are loose, wrinkly and cheap looking...

The original SA5000, or more so the SA3000 is still my favorite headphone.

I believe the HD800 is a copy, it not only looks similar but sounds very similar also.

Really? I've thought the same thing

. The design alone looks so similar.

Anyway, another owner checking in. I think this is my third time owning the SA5000 (also owned the SA3000). Love this headphone with acoustic music.

I made that comment about the HD800 before their release and quite a few people where offended.  Even the so called new ring driver.  What's in the SA5000, a big driver with a big hole in the middle.

Cheap looking copy, that plastic frame is a joke comparing to magnesium SA5000.
The thing is, HD800 sound better, like much, much better.
Man, why can't we have our cake and eat it too?

I don't recall any holes in SA5000 or Qualia drivers.

Qualia is such a darn good looking headphone. Super sleek overall. Too bad the price/performance is so dismal.
