He is one of my ueber favorite piano composers! The best bio in English (probably in any language) is by Faubian Bowers (and cheap from Dover). He was exactly contemporary with Rachmaninov, though he died early from a silly abscess.

His early stuff is Chopinesque, the later is unique.

Incidentally, if you just want to get a quick impression of what people have thought about a recording, this is a useful "quick 'n dirty" site. Reviews

You can limit by composer, title, genre, etc.

I think the Ruth Laredo sonatas are excellent. And as a bonus you get the Op 42 etudes (the F#minor is awesome), and other stuff.
Some think the Hamelin sonatas are best, I like them too.

#s 1 and 2 are Chopinesque, 3 and 4 are transitional. 5-10 are pure, mature Scriabin.
