Funny this comment was brought up, as I'm sitting in the library right now with my portable rig groovin', and the following just happened about 10 minutes ago...

I'm sitting here with my E5C's in, just zoning out to some Tool - Reflection, when an older lady approaches me from the right side. She starts making all these wierd (and I must say, hilarious) arm motions to get my attention. When I'm staring at her, she is speaking with very pronounced lip movements. She thinks I'm deaf and the E5C's are hearing aides. I pop them out and say "Can I help you?", and she is taken back! She asks what those things are in my ear, and I respond "They are headphones, only they go in my ear to isolate the music from outside noise." She then says, "Oh, they didn't look like headphones. I thought they were all white like the iPod's!"

In the end, she just wanted some computer help, which I gladly performed for her

When people see my ER-4Ps they figure they're $20 or $30 dollar cheap earbuds...

Most people who see them think I was crazy for spending $200 for the 4Ps. If they only knew...

I honestly think people would be too disgusted to steal er-4s. You know, cause of the bright yellow wax all over them. Besides, they look more like a "marital aid" than a pair of phones.

For earbuds though I don't see what the big deal about using the ipod ones is. I hate walking around in canalphones, and so i find myself using the buds a lot around campus/on the bus/etc. They're free, they fit my ears great, they match the ipod (okay i had to throw that one in

). Earbuds = convenience, and there's not any real audiophile earbuds worth bothering with.

When I wear my MX400's people have said a range of comments, usually inquiring about why I use the earbud type of headphones instead of their uber-cool stock CD player streetstyles. My reply is always along the lines of "I can guarantee these sound a million times better". They just kind of stop talking after that and probably ponder what "sound quality" is.
